Zusammenfassung: | This collection of essays examines the ways in which disputes and controversies about the application of scientific knowledge are resolved. Four concrete examples of public controversy are considered in detail: the efficacy of Laetrile, the classification of homosexuality as a disease, the setting of safety standards in the workplace, and the utility of nuclear energy as a source of power. The essays in this volume show that debates about these cases are not confined to matters of empirical fact. Rather, as is seen with most scientific and technical controversies, they focus on and are structured by complex ethical, economic, and political interests. Drs. Engelhardt and Caplan have brought together a distinguished group of scholars from the sciences and humanities, who sketch a theory of scientific controversy and attempt to provide recommendations about the ways in which both scientists and the public ought to seek more informed resolutions of highly contentious issues in science and technology. Scientific Controversies is offered as a contribution to the better understanding of the roles of both science and nonscientific interests in disputes and controversies pertaining to science and technology |

The role of the mass media in scientific controversy Rae Goddell The National Commission on Human Experimentation : procedures and outcomes Stephen E. Toulmin The forms and norms of closure / Ruth Macklin This collection of essays examines the ways in which disputes and controversies about the application of scientific knowledge are resolved. Scientific Controversies is offered as a contribution to the better understanding of the roles of both science and nonscientific interests in disputes and controversies pertaining to science and technology Gesellschaft Naturwissenschaft Philosophie Science / Social aspects / Case studies Technology / Social aspects / Case studies Science / Philosophy / Case studies Technology / Philosophy / Case studies Wissenssoziologie (DE-588)4066615-3 gnd rswk-swf Medizinische Ethik (DE-588)4074672-0 gnd rswk-swf Beilegung (DE-588)4284136-7 gnd rswk-swf Kontroverse (DE-588)4128337-5 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4522595-3 Fallstudiensammlung gnd-content Naturwissenschaften (DE-588)4041421-8 s Kontroverse (DE-588)4128337-5 s Beilegung (DE-588)4284136-7 s 1\p DE-604 Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s 2\p DE-604 Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 s 3\p DE-604 Medizinische Ethik (DE-588)4074672-0 s 4\p DE-604 Wissenssoziologie (DE-588)4066615-3 s 5\p DE-604 Engelhardt, Hugo Tristram 1941-2018 (DE-588)119132419 edt Caplan, Arthur L. 1950- (DE-588)113811217 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-25565-3 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-27560-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511628719 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
