Zusammenfassung: | This interdisciplinary volume of essays brings together a team of leading early modern historians and literary scholars in order to examine the changing conceptions, character, and condemnation of 'heresy' in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Definitions of 'heresy' and 'heretics' were the subject of heated controversies in England from the English Reformation to the end of the seventeenth century. These essays illuminate the significant literary issues involved in both defending and demonising heretical beliefs, including the contested hermeneutic strategies applied to the interpretation of the Bible, and they examine how debates over heresy stimulated the increasing articulation of arguments for religious toleration in England. Offering fresh perspectives on John Milton, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and others, this volume should be of interest to all literary, religious and political historians working on early modern English culture |

Keeble This interdisciplinary volume of essays brings together a team of leading early modern historians and literary scholars in order to examine the changing conceptions, character, and condemnation of 'heresy' in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Offering fresh perspectives on John Milton, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and others, this volume should be of interest to all literary, religious and political historians working on early modern English culture Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1530-1700 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Christian heresies / England / History / Modern period, 1500- Christian heresies in literature Christianity and literature / England / History / 16th century Christianity and politics / England / History / 16th century Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Häresie (DE-588)4022838-1 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Häresie (DE-588)4022838-1 s Geschichte 1530-1700 z 2\p DE-604 Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s 3\p DE-604 Loewenstein, David 1955- (DE-588)174079362 edt Marshall, John 1961- (DE-588)124320341 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-12685-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-82076-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511627507 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
