Zusammenfassung: | This book ranges over private and public reading, and over a variety of religious, social, and scientific communities to locate acts of reading in specific historical moments from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. It also charts the changes in reading habits that reflect broader social and political shifts during the period. A team of expert contributors cover topics including the processes of book production and distribution, audiences and markets, the material text, the relation of print to performance, and the politics of acts of reception. In addition, the volume emphasises the independence of early modern readers and their role in making meaning in an age in which increased literacy equaled social enfranchisement and interpretation was power. Meaning was not simply an authorial act but the work of many hands and processes, from editing, printing, and proofing, to reproducing, distributing, and finally reading |

Zwicker Reading, Society & Politics in Early Modern England Cambridge Cambridge University Press 2003 1 online resource (ix, 363 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) Errata: print, politics and poetry in early modern England -- Abandoning the capital in eighteenth-century London -- 'Boasting of silence': women readers in a patriarchal state -- Reading revelations: prophecy, hermeneutics and politics in early modern Britain -- Performances and playbooks: the closing of the theatres and the politics of drama -- Irrational, impractical and unprofitable: reading the news in seventeenth-century Britain -- Reading bodies -- Reading and experiment in the early Royal Society -- Martial, Jonson and the assertion of plagiarism -- The constitution of opinion and the pacification of reading -- Cato's retreat: fabula, historia and the question of constitutionalism in Mr. Locke's anonymous Essay on government This book ranges over private and public reading, and over a variety of religious, social, and scientific communities to locate acts of reading in specific historical moments from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. It also charts the changes in reading habits that reflect broader social and political shifts during the period. A team of expert contributors cover topics including the processes of book production and distribution, audiences and markets, the material text, the relation of print to performance, and the politics of acts of reception. Meaning was not simply an authorial act but the work of many hands and processes, from editing, printing, and proofing, to reproducing, distributing, and finally reading Geschichte 1700-1800 gnd rswk-swf Sozialgeschichte 1500-1800 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Gesellschaft Politik Books and reading / Social aspects / England / History Books and reading / Political aspects / England / History Literature and society / England / History Book industries and trade / England / History Buchherstellung (DE-588)4008639-2 gnd rswk-swf Leser (DE-588)4035441-6 gnd rswk-swf Leseverhalten (DE-588)4130705-7 gnd rswk-swf England / Intellectual life Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Leseverhalten (DE-588)4130705-7 s Buchherstellung (DE-588)4008639-2 s Sozialgeschichte 1500-1800 z 2\p DE-604 Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Leser (DE-588)4035441-6 s Geschichte 1700-1800 z 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 Sharpe, Kevin edt Zwicker, Steven N. edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-16851-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-82434-7 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511483974 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
