Zusammenfassung: | This book creates a new framework for the political and intellectual relations between the British Isles and America in a momentous period which witnessed the formation of modern states on both sides of the Atlantic and the extinction of an Anglican, aristocratic and monarchical order. Jonathan Clark integrates evidence from law and religion to reveal how the dynamics of early modern societies were essentially denominational. In a study of British and American discourse, he shows how rival conceptions of liberty were expressed in the conflicts created by Protestant dissent's hostility to an Anglican hegemony. The book argues that this model provides a key to collective acts of resistance to the established order throughout the period. The book's final section focuses on the defining episode for British and American history, and shows the way in which the American Revolution can be understood as a war of religion |

Clark Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1994 1 online resource (xviii, 404 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 05 Oct 2015) This book creates a new framework for the political and intellectual relations between the British Isles and America in a momentous period which witnessed the formation of modern states on both sides of the Atlantic and the extinction of an Anglican, aristocratic and monarchical order. The book's final section focuses on the defining episode for British and American history, and shows the way in which the American Revolution can be understood as a war of religion Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1660-1832 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politik Religion Politische Sprache (DE-588)4046559-7 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Recht (DE-588)4048737-4 gnd rswk-swf Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien USA United States / Politics and government / To 1775 United States / Politics and government / 1775-1783 United States / History / Revolution, 1775-1783 / Religious aspects Great Britain / Politics and government / 1660-1714 Great Britain / Politics and government / 1714-1820 Great Britain / Social conditions / 17th century Great Britain / Social conditions / 18th century United States / Social conditions / To 1865 Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Politische Sprache (DE-588)4046559-7 s Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 s Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Geschichte 1660-1832 z 1\p DE-604 Recht (DE-588)4048737-4 s Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-44510-8 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-44957-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511622076 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
