Zusammenfassung: | No series of events has had a more dramatic impact on the course of American history than the Civil War and the emancipation of four million black slaves. In this book Professor Roger Ransom examines the economic and political factors that led to the attempt by Southerners to dissolve the Union in 1860, and the equally determined effort of Northerners to preserve it. Drawing on recent research in economic, political, and social history, Ransom argues that the system of capitalist slavery in the South not only 'caused' the Civil War by producing tensions that could not be resolved by compromise; it also played a crucial role in the outcome of that War by crippling the southern war effort at the same time that emancipation became a unifying issue for the North |

Ransom Conflict & Compromise Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1989 1 online resource (xv, 317 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Title from publisher's bibliographic system (viewed on 01 Feb 2016) No series of events has had a more dramatic impact on the course of American history than the Civil War and the emancipation of four million black slaves. In this book Professor Roger Ransom examines the economic and political factors that led to the attempt by Southerners to dissolve the Union in 1860, and the equally determined effort of Northerners to preserve it. Drawing on recent research in economic, political, and social history, Ransom argues that the system of capitalist slavery in the South not only 'caused' the Civil War by producing tensions that could not be resolved by compromise; it also played a crucial role in the outcome of that War by crippling the southern war effort at the same time that emancipation became a unifying issue for the North Geschichte Sezessionskrieg (1861-1865) Sklaverei Slavery / United States / History Slaves / Emancipation / United States Abschaffung (DE-588)4200586-3 gnd rswk-swf Sezessionskrieg 1861-1865 (DE-588)4136055-2 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf USA United States / History / Civil War, 1861-1865 / Causes United States / History / Civil War, 1861-1865 / Economic aspects USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Sklaverei (DE-588)4055260-3 s USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 1\p DE-604 Sezessionskrieg 1861-1865 (DE-588)4136055-2 s 2\p DE-604 Abschaffung (DE-588)4200586-3 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-31167-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-32343-7 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139167895 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
