Zusammenfassung: | When do states choose to adopt a penitent stance towards the past? When do they choose to offer apologies for historical misdeeds, offer compensation for their victims and incorporate the darker sides of history into their textbooks, public monuments and museums? When do they choose not to do so? And what are the political consequences of how states portray the past? This book pursues these questions by examining how governments in post-1945 Austria, Germany and Japan have wrestled with the difficult legacy of the Second World War and the impact of their policies on regional politics in Europe and Asia. The book argues that states can reconcile over historical issues, but to do so requires greater political will and imposes greater costs than is commonly realized. At the same time, in an increasingly interdependent world, failure to do so can have a profoundly disruptive effect on regional relations and feed dangerous geopolitical tensions |

At the same time, in an increasingly interdependent world, failure to do so can have a profoundly disruptive effect on regional relations and feed dangerous geopolitical tensions Geschichte 1945-2010 gnd rswk-swf Politik Psychologie Weltkrieg (1939-1945) World War, 1939-1945 / Reparations World War, 1939-1945 / Historiography Restitution / Europe Reparations for historical injustices / Europe Cultural property / Repatriation / Europe World War, 1939-1945 / Confiscations and contributions / Europe Guilt / Political aspects World War, 1939-1945 / Psychological aspects War victims Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 gnd rswk-swf Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 gnd rswk-swf Kriegsschuldfrage (DE-588)4165715-9 gnd rswk-swf Europa Japan (DE-588)4028495-5 gnd rswk-swf Österreich (DE-588)4043271-3 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Österreich (DE-588)4043271-3 g Japan (DE-588)4028495-5 g Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 s Kriegsschuldfrage (DE-588)4165715-9 s Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 s Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s Geschichte 1945-2010 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-02160-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-67495-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139109437 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
