Zusammenfassung: | The Muslim conquest of the East in the seventh century entailed the subjugation of Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians and others. Although much has been written about the status of non-Muslims in the Islamic empire, no previous works have examined how the rules applying to minorities were formulated. Milka Levy-Rubin's remarkable book traces the emergence of these regulations from the first surrender agreements in the immediate aftermath of conquest to the formation of the canonic document called the Pact of 'Umar, which was formalized under the early 'Abbasids, in the first half of the ninth century. The study reveals that the conquered peoples themselves played a major role in the creation of these policies and that they were based on long-standing traditions, customs and institutions from earlier pre-Islamic cultures that originated in the worlds of both the conquerors and the conquered. In its connections to Roman, Byzantine and Sasanian traditions, the book will appeal to historians of Europe as well as Arabia and Persia |

In its connections to Roman, Byzantine and Sasanian traditions, the book will appeal to historians of Europe as well as Arabia and Persia Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 650-830 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politik Dhimmis (Islamic law) / Islamic Empire / History Religious minorities / Legal status, laws, etc / Islamic Empire / History Minorities (Islamic law) Islam and state / Islamic Empire / History Islam and politics / Islamic Empire / History Religious tolerance / Islamic Empire / History Ḏẖimmī (DE-588)4541704-0 gnd rswk-swf Rechtsstellung (DE-588)4134078-4 gnd rswk-swf Religiöse Minderheit (DE-588)4140292-3 gnd rswk-swf Islamic Empire / Ethnic relations Islamic Empire / Politics and government Abbasidenreich (DE-588)4221900-0 gnd rswk-swf Abbasidenreich (DE-588)4221900-0 g Religiöse Minderheit (DE-588)4140292-3 s Rechtsstellung (DE-588)4134078-4 s Ḏẖimmī (DE-588)4541704-0 s Geschichte 650-830 z DE-604 Geschichte z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-107-00433-7 (DE-604)BV039726877 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511977435 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
