Zusammenfassung: | The first study to focus on white and black women journalists and writers both before and after the Civil War, this book offers fresh insight into Southern intellectual life, the fight for women's rights and gender ideology. Based on new research into Southern magazines and newspapers, this book seeks to shift scholarly attention away from novelists and toward the rich and diverse periodical culture of the South between 1820 and 1900. Magazines were of central importance to the literary culture of the South because the region lacked the publishing centers that could produce large numbers of books. As editors, contributors, correspondents and reporters in the nineteenth century, Southern women entered traditionally male bastions when they embarked on careers in journalism. In so doing, they opened the door to calls for greater political and social equality at the turn of the twentieth century |

In so doing, they opened the door to calls for greater political and social equality at the turn of the twentieth century Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1820-1900 gnd rswk-swf Frau Geschichte Women in journalism / Southern States / History / 19th century Journalism / Southern States / History / 19th century Periodicals / Publishing / Southern States / History / 19th century Women's periodicals, American / Southern States / History / 19th century Literature publishing / Southern States / History / 19th century Women / Press coverage / Southern States / History / 19th century American literature / Southern States / Women authors / History and criticism American literature / 19th century / History and criticism Journalism and literature / United States / History / 19th century Autorin (DE-588)4258697-5 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 gnd rswk-swf Lektorin Verlag (DE-588)4416257-1 gnd rswk-swf Zeitschrift (DE-588)4067488-5 gnd rswk-swf Journalistin (DE-588)4028786-5 gnd rswk-swf Schriftstellerin (DE-588)4053311-6 gnd rswk-swf Weiße (DE-588)4132038-4 gnd rswk-swf USA USA Südstaaten (DE-588)4078674-2 gnd rswk-swf USA Südstaaten (DE-588)4078674-2 g Weiße (DE-588)4132038-4 s Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 s Schriftstellerin (DE-588)4053311-6 s Journalistin (DE-588)4028786-5 s Lektorin Verlag (DE-588)4416257-1 s Autorin (DE-588)4258697-5 s Zeitschrift (DE-588)4067488-5 s Geschichte 1820-1900 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-1-107-01266-0 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-107-64979-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511998478 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
