Zusammenfassung: | The French Revolution sparked an ideological debate which also brought Britain to the brink of revolution in the 1790s. Just as radicals wrote 'Jacobin' fiction, so the fear of rebellion prompted conservatives to respond with novels of their own; indeed, these soon outnumbered the Jacobin novels. This was the first survey of the full range of conservative novels produced in Britain during the 1790s and early 1800s. M. O. Grenby examines the strategies used by conservatives in their fiction, thus shedding new light on how the anti-Jacobin campaign was understood and organised in Britain. Chapters cover the representation of revolution and rebellion, the attack on the 'new philosophy' of radicals such as Godwin and Wollstonecraft, and the way in which hierarchy is defended in these novels. Grenby's book offers an insight into the society which produced and consumed anti-Jacobin novels, and presents a case for reexamining these neglected texts |

Conclusion The French Revolution sparked an ideological debate which also brought Britain to the brink of revolution in the 1790s. Grenby's book offers an insight into the society which produced and consumed anti-Jacobin novels, and presents a case for reexamining these neglected texts Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1791-1805 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1792-1805 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte English fiction / 18th century / History and criticism English fiction / 19th century / History and criticism Conservatism / Great Britain / History / 18th century Conservatism / Great Britain / History / 19th century Political fiction, English / History and criticism English fiction / French influences Romanticism / Great Britain Conservatism in literature Jacobins in literature Jakobiner (DE-588)4162691-6 gnd rswk-swf Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Französische Revolution (DE-588)4018183-2 gnd rswk-swf Konservativismus (DE-588)4032187-3 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich Großbritannien France / History / Revolution, 1789-1799 / Literature and the revolution France / History / Revolution, 1789-1799 / Foreign public opinion, British Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Konservativismus (DE-588)4032187-3 s Französische Revolution (DE-588)4018183-2 s Jakobiner (DE-588)4162691-6 s Geschichte 1791-1805 z 2\p DE-604 Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Geschichte 1792-1805 z 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-02126-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-80351-9 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511484278 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
