Zusammenfassung: | The tale of the onstage fight between prima donnas Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni is notorious, appearing in music histories to this day, but it is a fiction. Starting from this misunderstanding, The Rival Sirens suggests that the rivalry fostered between the singers in 1720s London was in large part a social construction, one conditioned by local theatrical context and audience expectations, and heightened by manipulations of plot and music. This book offers readings of operas by Handel and Bononcini as performance events, inflected by the audience's perceptions of singer persona and contemporary theatrical and cultural contexts. Through examining the case of these two women, Suzanne Aspden demonstrates that the personae of star performers, as well as their voices, were of crucial importance in determining the shape of an opera during the early part of the eighteenth century |

Through examining the case of these two women, Suzanne Aspden demonstrates that the personae of star performers, as well as their voices, were of crucial importance in determining the shape of an opera during the early part of the eighteenth century Handel, George Frideric / 1685-1759 / Operas Handel, George Frideric / 1685-1759 / Performances Cuzzoni, Francesca / 1696-1778 / Criticism and interpretation Bordoni, Faustina / 1697-1781 / Criticism and interpretation Cuzzoni, Francesca 1696-1778 (DE-588)1019247940 gnd rswk-swf Händel, Georg Friedrich 1685-1759 (DE-588)118544489 gnd rswk-swf Hasse-Bordoni, Faustina 1697-1781 (DE-588)118513478 gnd rswk-swf Bononcini, Giovanni 1670-1747 (DE-588)121260631 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1720-1730 gnd rswk-swf Opera / 18th century Rivalität (DE-588)4178251-3 gnd rswk-swf Oper (DE-588)4043582-9 gnd rswk-swf Aufführung (DE-588)4143388-9 gnd rswk-swf Primadonna (DE-588)4076344-4 gnd rswk-swf London (DE-588)4074335-4 gnd rswk-swf Händel, Georg Friedrich 1685-1759 (DE-588)118544489 p Bononcini, Giovanni 1670-1747 (DE-588)121260631 p London (DE-588)4074335-4 g Oper (DE-588)4043582-9 s Aufführung (DE-588)4143388-9 s Primadonna (DE-588)4076344-4 s Rivalität (DE-588)4178251-3 s Geschichte 1720-1730 z 1\p DE-604 Cuzzoni, Francesca 1696-1778 (DE-588)1019247940 p Hasse-Bordoni, Faustina 1697-1781 (DE-588)118513478 p 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-03337-5 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139519663 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
