Zusammenfassung: | This book proposes a theory of the distribution of adverbial adjuncts in a Principles and Parameters framework, claiming that there are few syntactic principles specific to adverbials; rather, for the most part, adverbials adjoin freely to any projection. Adjuncts' possible hierarchical positions are determined by whether they can receive a proper interpretation, according to their selectional (including scope) requirements and general compositional rules, while linear order is determined by hierarchical position along with a system of directionality principles and morphological weight, both of which apply generally to adjuncts and all other syntactic elements. A wide range of adverbial types is analysed; predicational adverbs (such as manner, and modal adverbs), domain expressions like financially, temporal, frequency, duration and focusing adverbials; participant PPs (e.g. locatives and benefactives); resultative and conditional clauses, and others, taken primarily from English, Chinese, French and Italian, with occasional reference to others (such as German and Japanese) |

Conclusions and Prospects This book proposes a theory of the distribution of adverbial adjuncts in a Principles and Parameters framework, claiming that there are few syntactic principles specific to adverbials; rather, for the most part, adverbials adjoin freely to any projection. A wide range of adverbial types is analysed; predicational adverbs (such as manner, and modal adverbs), domain expressions like financially, temporal, frequency, duration and focusing adverbials; participant PPs (e.g. locatives and benefactives); resultative and conditional clauses, and others, taken primarily from English, Chinese, French and Italian, with occasional reference to others (such as German and Japanese) Grammatik Grammar, Comparative and general / Adverbials Grammar, Comparative and general / Adjuncts Grammar, Comparative and general / Syntax Semantics Syntax (DE-588)4058779-4 gnd rswk-swf Adverbiale (DE-588)4140513-4 gnd rswk-swf Adjunkt Linguistik (DE-588)4338277-0 gnd rswk-swf GB-Theorie (DE-588)4325015-4 gnd rswk-swf Adverb (DE-588)4191574-4 gnd rswk-swf Adverbiale (DE-588)4140513-4 s Syntax (DE-588)4058779-4 s 1\p DE-604 Adjunkt Linguistik (DE-588)4338277-0 s GB-Theorie (DE-588)4325015-4 s 2\p DE-604 Adverb (DE-588)4191574-4 s 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-02818-9 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-77134-4 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9780511486258 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
