Zusammenfassung: | Republicanism and Liberalism in America and the German States represents the cooperative effort of a group of American and German scholars to move the historical debate on Republicanism and Liberalism to a new stage. Previously, the relationship between Republican and Liberal ideas, concepts and world views has been discussed in the context of American revolutionary and late eighteenth-century history. While the German states did not experience successful revolutions like those in North America and France, Republican and Liberal ideas and 'language' deeply affected German political thinking and culture, especially in the southern states. The essays published in this book expand the time frame of the debate into the first half of the nineteenth century, applying an innovative and comparative German-American perspective. By systematically studying the similarities and differences in the understanding of Republicanism and Liberalism in the United States and German states, the collection stimulates efforts toward a comprehensive interpretation of political, intellectual and social developments in the 'modernizing' Atlantic world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries |

Steinfeld Republicanism and Liberalism in America and the German States represents the cooperative effort of a group of American and German scholars to move the historical debate on Republicanism and Liberalism to a new stage. By systematically studying the similarities and differences in the understanding of Republicanism and Liberalism in the United States and German states, the collection stimulates efforts toward a comprehensive interpretation of political, intellectual and social developments in the 'modernizing' Atlantic world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Geschichte 1750-1850 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politik Political culture / United States / History Political culture / Germany / History Liberalism / United States / History Liberalism / Germany / History Republicanism / United States / History Republicanism / Germany / History Republikanismus (DE-588)4115751-5 gnd rswk-swf Liberalismus (DE-588)4035582-2 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland USA United States / Politics and government / 1775-1783 United States / Politics and government / 1783-1865 Germany / Politics and government / 1740-1806 Germany / Politics and government / 1806-1848 USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 1996 Madison Wis. gnd-content Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Liberalismus (DE-588)4035582-2 s Republikanismus (DE-588)4115751-5 s Geschichte 1750-1850 z 2\p DE-604 Henretta, James A. edt Heideking, Jürgen 1947- edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-10098-4 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-80066-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139052313 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
