Zusammenfassung: | The Levellers were a crucial component of a radically democratic movement during the civil wars in seventeenth-century England. This was to be democratic at a time when the very idea of democracy conjured up nothing good; with its suggestion of anarchy and the 'levelling' of distinctions in rank and of property, even the holding of women in common. This collection of thirteen fully annotated Leveller writings, including their famous Agreements of the People, is important as a contribution not only to the understanding of the English civil wars, but also of democratic theory. The editor's introduction sets the Leveller ideas in their context and, together with a chronology, short biographies of the leading figures and a guide to further reading, will be of interest to students of the English civil wars, the history of political thought and the history of democratic ideas |

The editor's introduction sets the Leveller ideas in their context and, together with a chronology, short biographies of the leading figures and a guide to further reading, will be of interest to students of the English civil wars, the history of political thought and the history of democratic ideas Geschichte 1645-1649 gnd rswk-swf Politik Politische Wissenschaft Levellers Political science / Great Britain / Early works to 1800 Quelle (DE-588)4135952-5 gnd rswk-swf Englischer Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4134026-7 gnd rswk-swf Levellers (DE-588)4140238-8 gnd rswk-swf Politisches Denken (DE-588)4115590-7 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Great Britain / Politics and government / 1625-1649 (DE-588)4135952-5 Quelle gnd-content Englischer Bürgerkrieg (DE-588)4134026-7 s Politisches Denken (DE-588)4115590-7 s Quelle (DE-588)4135952-5 s 1\p DE-604 Levellers (DE-588)4140238-8 s Geschichte 1645-1649 z 2\p DE-604 DE-604 Sharp, Andrew 1940- (DE-588)1023068427 edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-62402-2 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-521-62511-1 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139171250 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
