Zusammenfassung: | Immigration, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Brazil, 1808 to the Present examines the immigration to Brazil of millions of Europeans, Asians and Middle Easterners beginning in the nineteenth century. Jeffrey Lesser analyzes how these newcomers and their descendants adapted to their new country and how national identity was formed as they became Brazilians along with their children and grandchildren. Lesser argues that immigration cannot be divorced from broader patterns of Brazilian race relations, as most immigrants settled in the decades surrounding the final abolition of slavery in 1888 and their experiences were deeply conditioned by ideas of race and ethnicity formed long before their arrival. This broad exploration of the relationships between immigration, ethnicity and nation allows for analysis of one of the most vexing areas of Brazilian study: identity |

Epilogue: the song remains the same Immigration, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Brazil, 1808 to the Present examines the immigration to Brazil of millions of Europeans, Asians and Middle Easterners beginning in the nineteenth century. This broad exploration of the relationships between immigration, ethnicity and nation allows for analysis of one of the most vexing areas of Brazilian study: identity Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1808-heute gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1808-2012 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1808-2009 gnd rswk-swf Einwanderer Geschichte National characteristics, Brazilian / History / 19th century National characteristics, Brazilian / History / 20th century Immigrants / Brazil / History / 19th century Immigrants / Brazil / History / 20th century Ethnizität (DE-588)4220764-2 gnd rswk-swf Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 gnd rswk-swf Multikulturelle Gesellschaft (DE-588)4214151-5 gnd rswk-swf Nationenbildung (DE-588)4075230-6 gnd rswk-swf Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 gnd rswk-swf Brasilien Brazil / Ethnic relations / History Brasilien (DE-588)4008003-1 gnd rswk-swf Brasilien (DE-588)4008003-1 g Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 s Ethnizität (DE-588)4220764-2 s Nationenbildung (DE-588)4075230-6 s Geschichte 1808-2009 z DE-604 Multikulturelle Gesellschaft (DE-588)4214151-5 s Nationalbewusstsein (DE-588)4041282-9 s Geschichte 1808-2012 z Geschichte 1808-heute z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-521-19362-7 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-521-14535-0 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139026796 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
