adam_text | This is an introductory book on elementary particles and their interactions. It starts out with many-
body Schrödinger theory and its Second Quantization and leads, via its generalization, to relativistic
quantum field theories of various spins, and to gravity. These begin with the best known quantum
field theory so far, the quantum electrodynamics (QED) of photons and electrons. It contains the
theory of strong interactions between the elementary constituents of matter (presently quarks). This
is possible due to the property called asymptotic freedom. On the way one has to tackle the problem
of removing various infinities by renormalization. The divergent sums of infinitely many diagrams
are performed with the help of renormalization group theory, or as an alternative with the easier-
to-handle Variational Perturbation Theory (VPT). The latter is an outcome of the Feynman-Kleinert
variational approach to path integrals discussed in two earlier books by the author, one representing
a comprehensive treatise on path integrals, the other dealing with the field theory of critical
phenomena. Unlike ordinary perturbation theory, VPT produces uniformly convergent series which
are valid from weak to strong couplings, where critical phenomena emerge. The present book develops
the theory of effective actions which allow to treat quantum phenomena with classical formalism.
For example, it derives the observed anomalous power laws from an extremum of the action of
strongly interacting theories. Their fluctuations are not based on Gaussian distributions, as in the
perturbative treatment of quantum field theories, or in asymptotically-free theories, but on dramatic
deviations from the average, which are much larger than normal and obey power-like distributions.
Exactly solvable models are discussed and their physical properties are compared with those
derived from general methods. In the last chapter we discuss the problem of quantizing the classical
theory of gravity.
Plagen Kleinert is professor of physics in Berlin, Germany (Freie Universität). As a
visiting scientist, he has spent extended periods of time at CERN, the European
Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva; at Caltech in Pasadena; at the
Universities of California in Berkeley, Santa Barbara, and San Diego; at the Los
Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico; and at Princeton University, New Jersey.
He has made numerous contributions to the understanding of particle physics, mathematical physics,
condensed matter physics, chemical physics, and nuclear physics. His two-volume book Gauge Fields
in Condensed Matter (World Scientific, 1989) develops a new quantum field theory of phase transitions
on the basis of disorder fields. Such fields have meanwhile become a powerful tool to investigate
the statistical properties of fluctuating line-like excitations in various many-body systems, such as
superfluids, superconductors, and crystals. The most popular of his books deals with Path Integrals
in Quantum Mechanics, Statistics, Polymer Physics, and Financial Markets, 5th Ed. (World Scientific,
2009). This is so far the most comprehensive text on this subject. In 2001 he published the book
Critical Properties of ^-Theories (World Scientific, 2001, with co-author V. Schulte-Frohlinde). It
is a thorough review on the field theoretic renormalization group treatment of critical phenomena.
There a short-cut approach is developed on the basis of a field theoretic version of variational
perturbation theory. Another of his books is entitled Multivalued Fields in Condensed Matter,
Electromagnetism, and Gravitation (World Scientific, 2008). It shows that many phenomena in physics,
in particular all those commonly explained by gauge theories, can be understood as consequences
of a Riemann-sheet nature of spacetime.
