Zusammenfassung:Sheet music was an important cultural phenomenon of the Victorian age. Hiram Powers’s Greek Slave inspired several musical compositions, which raise important issues about the musical, visual, and commodity culture of Victorian Britain. This article accompanies and examines the implications of newly recorded performances of works neglected since the 1850s, including S. W. New’s ballad "The Greek Slave" and Louis Antoine Jullien’s "The Greek Slave Waltz".
