Zusammenfassung: | Selling Shakespeare tells a story of Shakespeare's life and career in print, a story centered on the people who created, bought, and sold books in the early modern period. The interests and investments of publishers and booksellers have defined our ideas of what is 'Shakespearean', and attending to their interests demonstrates how one version of Shakespearean authorship surpassed the rest. In this book, Adam G. Hooks identifies and examines four pivotal episodes in Shakespeare's life in print: the debut of his narrative poems, the appearance of a series of best-selling plays, the publication of collected editions of his works, and the cataloguing of those works. Hooks also offers a new kind of biographical investigation and historicist criticism, one based not on external life documents, nor on the texts of Shakespeare's works, but on the books that were printed, published, sold, circulated, collected, and catalogued under his name |

Hooks also offers a new kind of biographical investigation and historicist criticism, one based not on external life documents, nor on the texts of Shakespeare's works, but on the books that were printed, published, sold, circulated, collected, and catalogued under his name Shakespeare, William / 1564-1616 / Bibliography Shakespeare, William / 1564-1616 / Biography Shakespeare, William / 1564-1616 / Relations with printers Shakespeare, William 1564-1616 (DE-588)118613723 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1700 Geschichte 1500-1600 Geschichte 1590-1700 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Dramatists, English / Early modern, 1500-1700 / Biography / History and criticism Book industries and trade / England / History / 16th century Book industries and trade / England / History / 17th century Textgeschichte (DE-588)4117192-5 gnd rswk-swf Buchhandel (DE-588)4008626-4 gnd rswk-swf Ausgabe Druckwerk (DE-588)4143517-5 gnd rswk-swf Verlag (DE-588)4063004-3 gnd rswk-swf England (DE-588)4014770-8 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4006432-3 Bibliografie gnd-content (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content Shakespeare, William 1564-1616 (DE-588)118613723 p England (DE-588)4014770-8 g Ausgabe Druckwerk (DE-588)4143517-5 s Buchhandel (DE-588)4008626-4 s Geschichte 1590-1700 z DE-604 Verlag (DE-588)4063004-3 s Textgeschichte (DE-588)4117192-5 s Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-13807-0 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-316-50507-6 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781316488836 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
