Zusammenfassung: | A body of theory has developed about the role and function of memory in creating and maintaining cultural identity. Yet there has been no consideration of the rich Mediterranean and Near Eastern traditions of laments for fallen cities in commemorating or resolving communal trauma. This volume offers new insights into the trope of the fallen city in folk-song and a variety of literary genres. These commemorations reveal memories modified by diverse agendas, and contains narrative structures and motifs that show the meaning of memory-making about fallen cities. Opening a new avenue of research into the Mediterranean genre of city lament, this book examines references to, or re-workings of, otherwise lost texts or ways of commemorating fallen cities in the extant texts, and with greater emphasis than usual on the point of view of the victors |

Opening a new avenue of research into the Mediterranean genre of city lament, this book examines references to, or re-workings of, otherwise lost texts or ways of commemorating fallen cities in the extant texts, and with greater emphasis than usual on the point of view of the victors Laments / Mediterranean Region / History and criticism Ruins in literature Cities and towns in literature Stadt (DE-588)4056723-0 gnd rswk-swf Untergang (DE-588)4135600-7 gnd rswk-swf Untergang Motiv (DE-588)4284110-0 gnd rswk-swf Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 gnd rswk-swf Griechisch (DE-588)4113791-7 gnd rswk-swf Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 gnd rswk-swf Latein (DE-588)4114364-4 gnd rswk-swf Stadt Motiv (DE-588)4126697-3 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Griechisch (DE-588)4113791-7 s Latein (DE-588)4114364-4 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Stadt Motiv (DE-588)4126697-3 s Untergang Motiv (DE-588)4284110-0 s 2\p DE-604 Antike (DE-588)4068754-5 s Stadt (DE-588)4056723-0 s Untergang (DE-588)4135600-7 s Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 s 3\p DE-604 Bachvarova, Mary R. edt Dutsch, Dorota M. edt Suter, Ann 1938- edt Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-1-107-03196-8 https://doi.org/10.1017/CBO9781139424387 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
