Zusammenfassung: | In the context of commemorating the Great War and the battle of Waterloo, it seemed interesting to revisit the theme of the war in Ancient Egypt by gathering in this book the essential results of the lectures presented to the Catholic University of Louvain. The studies published in this book offer on the theme a variety of approaches, associating the textual and iconographic sources. Some strive to describe the operations led outside by Egyptians, both in Nubia and in the Near East. Others are interested in the foreign armies which tried to settle down in Egypt, successfully or not. The concerned sovereigns are Thutmose III, Ramesses II, Ramesses III, Pianchy and Psammetichus II. The near eastern cities which specially hold attention are Gaza, Megiddo, Beth Shan and Kadesh |

OF THE TWO FIRST COURSES ARE DECORATED WITH SCENES OF A MILITARY NATURE.
THERE
ARE FIVE MILITARY CAMPAIGNS REPRESENTED ON THE WALLS OF THE TEN/PIE: ONE
IN NU-

SOME
ARE ILLUSTRATED WITH RELIEFS THAT ARE ACCOMPANIED BY ONE OR MORE
INSCRIPTIONS
RECOUNTING THE IMPORTANT STEPS OF THE FIGHTS, WHILE OTHERS ARE ONLY
PRESENTED
BY RELIEFS. IF IT HAS BEEN PROVED THAT THE CULTIC SCENES HAVE BEEN
COPIED FROM
THE RAMESSEUM, SOME OF THE MILITARY RELIEFS HAVE ALSO BEEN COPIED FROM

THE
BEST DOCUMENTED OF ALL THE WARS OF THE XXVLTH DYNASTY : THUS IT IS
MENTIONNED
ON SEVERAL OFFICIAL EGYPTIAN STELAE, BUT ALSO IN GRAFFITI LEFT AT ABU
SIMBEL BY
THE CARIAN, GREEK AND PHOENICIAN MERCENARIES WHO WERE PART OF IT. THIS
IN-
FORMATION, ABUNDANT AND DIVERSE, MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND
THIS
CONFLICT, ITS CAUSES, HOW IT PROGRESSED AND ITS CONSEQUENCES.
FURTHERMORE, IT
MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO GET AN IDEA OF THE COMPOSITION OF THE EGYPTIAN
ARMIES
DURING THE SAITE PERIOD, AND IN PARTICULAR TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE
OF
GREEK AND NEAR-EAST MERCENARIES FROM THAT PERIODE OF TIME.
