Compared to other disciplines, research on trust in entrepreneurship is scarce
and particularly efforts to clarify its role for the relationship of entrepreneurs
and investors are rare. However, trust is an important lever to advance the
understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurs and investors. It fa-
cilitates cooperation, which is essential for successful venture development in
the post-investment phase. Hence, it is highly relevant for investors and entre-
preneurs to understand its role in the context of their venture.
Despite valuable research on trust in the entrepreneurship context, literature
agrees that more dedicated efforts are needed to understand the specific dy-
namics in the relationship between entrepreneurs and investors. This disserta-
tion helps address the research gap by following the entrepreneur’s perspective
in the post-investment phase and exploring the role of trust in the relationship.
In particular, two research questions are addressed: (l) Which antecedents in-
fluence entrepreneurs’ trust in their investor? (2) What are consequences of
entrepreneurs’ trust that influence cooperation between entrepreneurs and
investors?
By reviewing research and transferring established concepts from trust litera-
ture to entrepreneurship, this study offers an introduction to the overall topic.
Using survey data of German speaking entrepreneurs reporting on the rela-
tionship with their main investor, character- and behavior-based antecedents
of entrepreneurs’ trust in their investors as well as perceptual and behavioral
consequences of their trust are investigated. Researchers and practitioners
seeking to understand entrepreneurs’ trust in their investor, including its prac-
tical implications, will find guidance in this dissertation.
