lighting the history and current issues of political life of the Ukrainian people

V. Potulnytski (Kiyv). The Problem of the Common Past of the Slavic
Peoples in the Framework of the Discussions Between the Leading
European Scholars in the First Half of the 1930s .161
The first half of the 1930s should be regarded as a turning point in the dis-
cussions between the leading historians of Eastern Europe toward the question
of the possibility of the common history of the Slavic peoples. The author is
making the synthesis of the four major points of view on this question on the
basis of the own comparative analysis. That is the ideas of Czechoslovak
scholar Jaroslaw Bidlo, German Professor Otto Hoetsch, from the one side,
and Polish historian Marceli Handelsman, Ukrainian scholar Myron Korduba,
from the another side. For Jaroslaw Bidlo and Otto Hoetsch, taking into account
the ideas of Bidlo about differentiation of Europe into the two cultural worlds
(orthodox and non-orthodox), and the conception of Hoetsch about the domi-
nant influences of the culture of the so-called “northern lands” on the Slavic
peoples, the idea of the common past for all the Slavic peoples was unaccept-
able. In contradiction to this point of view, for Marceli Handelsman the idea of
the common history of the Slavic peoples is acceptable, taking into account his
suggestion about the periodization of the history of Slavs on four main stages,
which simultaneously were the stages of the development of Eastern Europe.
The first stage of four stages, defined by Handelsman, lasted until the end of
the eleventh century. It witnessed the foundation of the majority of the Slavic
peoples and their states. The time span of the second stage was from the
eleventh until the beginning of the eighteenth century. That was the period of
the flourishing and fall of the majority of the Slavic peoples. The third stage
lasted from the eighteenth century until the First World War. During this time
existed the Russian, Austrian and Prussian monarchies, which united under
387
CjiaBicTH^Ha 36ipica, bhfi. I
their dominance the majority of the Slavic peoples. The last, fourth stage, de-
veloped from 1914 until the beginning of the 1930s. It was marked by the strug-
gle of the numerous Slavic peoples for their independence. Myron Korduba
stressed the possibility of the existence of the common roots of the eastern
Slavic peoples in the ancient Kyivan period, but indicated that later, during so
called Lithuanian period, Ukraine was strongly incorporated to the sphere of
western European influences. The main visions of all historians on the problem
of common or separate Slavic history is reconstructed through the analysis of
their research works, where the distinction in the historiosophical visions of
the problem are also described.

tions, published in the “Ukrainskyi istorychnyi zhumal” in 50’s - 80’s of the

most popular themes for researchers were the interaction between the two na-
tions in times of “Great October Socialist Revolution” and the Civil War, the
World War II and during the 19th - the early 20th century. Since 1970’s the topic
of the recent history of contacts between both nations gained popularity.
D. Burim (Kyiv). Dmytro Doroshenko as a Historian
of the Slavic Peoples and Eastern Europe .192

most of which being created during the exile period in the scholar’s life. At this
time he had actively collaborated in the Ukrainian and foreign editions, placing
scientific and popular articles on the history of the Slavic and East European
countries there the exile the historian wrote the monograph “Slavic world in
its past and present”, where the history, culture and ethnography of the Slavic
peoples were completely described. The newest ideology other than the tradi-
tional ideology of the Ukrainian Slavophilism of the 19th century had been used
in its wilting. The historian offers a new understanding of the issue, which had
been based the national and state interests and needs of the each of the Slavic
peoples, perceiving an idea of the Slavic reciprocity and community based on
