Its biggest part is, with regard to the character of surviving historical sources, ded- icatet to the possession situation of the monastery. Nevertheless, our effort was to bring as many informations about social status of the abbey and its representatives as possible. We also tried to de- scribe the tasks of the monastery within the Hungarian kingdom, its position in the church and the Benedictine order and its rela- tions to other ecclesiastic insitutions, mainly to the archbishop of Esztergom. Some space is dedicated also to the everyday life in the monastery, its building development and the activity of the locus credibilium by the convent of Hronsky Svaty Behadik. The abbey of Hronsky Svaty Behadik was one of the most important ecclesiaistic institutions within the kingdom and to this corresponded also the number of possessions, that had king Gejza I. given to it already by its founding. Some of its abbots had the title of a royal chaplain and with this title was of course connect- ed contact and some influence on the royal court. But we know that these abbots were in relation to the court taken not only as ecclesiastic dignitaries but also as learned men, that were able to fulfil various diplomatic tasks. Thanks to this position of its abbots gained the abbey from hungarian kings many privileges, that in- cluded protection of its possessions or rights of its serfs. Important in relation to secular power was the election of ab- bot. According to Regula Benedicti belonged this right only to the monks, that were living in the monastery and that should have elect- ed the abbot from among themselves. However already from the 14th century there are informations, that for abbots were elected monks or even abbots from other monasteries, so it is not likely that these were 155 elected by monks of Hronskÿ Svâtÿ Benadik. From the 15th century we have already concrete informations, that it was king who installed the abbots. This right is however not clear and the whole situation ap- pears as if the ruler competed with the convent and abbot was elected by the one who succeeded to use the situation better. This changed after 1526, when it seems, that the election of abbot was wholly in king‘s hands. In a short time was the abbey handled no more by ab- bots but only by kings administrators. And so, although the monas- tery officially should have still fulfilled its original task - serve God, in truth it began to be treated rather as a secular possession. Important function of the monastery in Hronsky Svâtÿ Benadik within the kingdom was also activity of the locus credibil- ium by its convent. Of regular activity of this locus credibilium can we speak since the thirties of 14th century. The abbey in Hronsky Svâtÿ Benadik was one of most signifi- cant monasteries also with regard to its position in the benedictine order in Hungarian kingdom. The period of its greatest influence was under governance of the abbot Siegfried (I.), of which we know, that in the thirties and fourties of 14th century was along with some other abbots the leader of general chapter of bénédic- tines in Hungarian kingdom. Since 1314 had the abbey in Hronsky Svâtÿ Benadik its sub- sidiary monastery in Stôla, for some time was subordinate to it the originally celestine monastery in Prievidza and it is possible that subsidiary to Hronsky Svâtÿ Benadik was also the benedictine monastery in Trnava by the hospital of St. Cross. As to the relation with Holy See, the pope was until 1526 the one who confirmed abbots of Hronskÿ Svâtÿ Benadik in their office. As significant ecclesiastic dignitaries they used to be authorized with various tasks connected with ecclesiastic matters in Hungarian king- dom. From popes gained the abbey also many privileges, concerning possessions, position of abbots or spiritual life in the monastery. According to Régula Benedicti should have been monasteries subordinate to bishop and until 1209 there is no reason to suppose that it was different in case of Hronskÿ Svâtÿ Benadik. However ifis likely that in the year 1209 the situation changed thanks to papal privilege, of which we suppose that it equalized abbots of Hronskÿ Svâtÿ Benadik with bishops. This indicates also the great number 156 of possession disputes between the abbey and archbishop of Esz- tergom. The position of the abbey probably changed again after 1526 - we have an information from 1536, that in spiritual matters belonged the abbey under authority of the archbishop. As to significant personalities from among abbots of Hronsky Svàtÿ Benadik, we want to mention at least two of them - the abbot Siegfried L (1330 - 1355) and Nicholas of Bologna (1410 - 1438). The governance of the abbot Siegfried was for the monastery its most succesful period, though mainly in possession matters. He was very active within the benedictine order, his merit was for exemple the return of some monasteries from secular people to benedictines and thanks to his abilities he became one of the leaders of general chap- ter of benedictines in Hungarian kingdom. He was several times authorized with various tasks by pope and we know also about his journey to England in hungarian kings services. Under his govern- ance began extensive rebuilding of the church in gothic style. The situation of the abbot Nicholas of Bologna was much worse than that of Siegfried as regards the period, in which he ad- ministrated the monastery, and the situation in Hungarian king- dom. Under his governance was the monastery even burned down by Hussites. The abbot Nicholas however in spite of many troubles achieved significant position at the royal court and in 1417 accom- panied the king at the council of Constance. The monastery buildings were probably from the beginning constructed to quadrangle, of which one side was the church. Original romanesque church was in 14th century completely re- builted in gothic style. The rebuilding of other buildings was be- cause of lack of finance and other unfavourable circumstances not finished until the first half of 16th century. Social status of the abbey was of course connected with its possession situation. The monastery in Hronsky Svàty Benadik was, as we have already mentioned, one of the richest in the Hun- garian kingdom, because the aim of its fouder was to create sig- nificant and influential ecclesiaistic insitution. We can say that in possession matters was the abbey until the end oh 14th century succesful, but then the situation got increasingly worse because of many possession disputes and also because of general situation in Hungarian kingdom. 157
