In Sputnik's Shadow provides a lens to do just that, by tracing the rise and fall of the President's Science Advisory Committee from its ascendance under Eisenhower in the wake of the Soviet launching of Sputnik to its demise during the Nixon years. Members of this committee shared a strong sense of technological skepticism; they were just as inclined to advise the president about what technology couldn't do-for national security, space exploration, arms control, and environmental protection-as about what it could do. Zuoyue Wang examines key turning points during the twentieth century, including the beginning of the Cold War, the debates over nuclear weapons, the Sputnik crisis in 1957, the struggle over the Vietnam War, and the eventual end of the Cold War, showing how the involvement of scientists in executive policymaking evolved over time. Bringing new insights to the intellectual, social, and cultural histories of the era, this book not only depicts the drama of Cold War American science, it gives perspective to how we think about technological advancements today United States / President's Science Advisory Committee fast Cold War (1945-1989) fast United States / President's Science Advisory Committee United States President's Science Advisory Committee USA Präsident Science Advisory Committee (DE-588)1040702-9 gnd rswk-swf USA Präsident (DE-588)2033432-1 gnd rswk-swf 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1957-1973 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1953-1973 gnd rswk-swf POLITICAL SCIENCE / Public Policy / Economic Policy bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Government & Business bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Development / Economic Development bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Development / Business Development bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Structural Adjustment bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Development / General bisacsh Political science fast Science and state fast Sputnik satellites fast HISTORY / Modern / 20th Century bisacsh Geschichte Politische Wissenschaft Wirtschaft Wirtschaftspolitik Science and state United States History 20th century Sputnik satellites Cold War Ost-West-Konflikt (DE-588)4075770-5 gnd rswk-swf Berater (DE-588)4112711-0 gnd rswk-swf Sicherheitspolitik (DE-588)4116489-1 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 gnd rswk-swf Politikberatung (DE-588)4046515-9 gnd rswk-swf Technischer Fortschritt (DE-588)4059252-2 gnd rswk-swf Forschungspolitik (DE-588)4125050-3 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA Präsident (DE-588)2033432-1 b Politikberatung (DE-588)4046515-9 s Sicherheitspolitik (DE-588)4116489-1 s Forschungspolitik (DE-588)4125050-3 s Geschichte z 1\p DE-604 Berater (DE-588)4112711-0 s Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 s Geschichte 1953-1973 z 2\p DE-604 USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Ost-West-Konflikt (DE-588)4075770-5 s Technischer Fortschritt (DE-588)4059252-2 s 3\p DE-604 USA Präsident Science Advisory Committee (DE-588)1040702-9 b Geschichte 1957-1973 z 4\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=243111 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
