Between April 1942 and October 1943, about 250,000 Jews from European countries and the Soviet Union were sent to the Nazi death camp at Sobibor in occupied Poland. Sobibor was not a transit camp or work camp: its sole purpose was efficient mass murder. On October 14, 1943, approximately half of the 650 or so prisoners still alive at Sobibor undertook a daring and precisely planned revolt, killing SS officers and fleeing through minefields and machine-gun fire into the surrounding forests, farms, and towns. Only about forty-two of them, including Fiszel, are known to have survived to the end of the war In 1943 the heroic leaders of the revolt at Sobibor, Sasha Perchersky and Leon Feldhendler, implored fellow prisoners to promise that anyone who survived would tell the story of Sobibor: not just of the horrific atrocities committed there, but of the courage and humanity of those who fought back, Bialowitz has kept that promise.--Book Jacket |

Resettling in the United States A Promise at Sobibor is the story of Fiszel Bialowitz, a teenaged Polish Jew who escaped the Nazi gas chambers. Only about forty-two of them, including Fiszel, are known to have survived to the end of the war In 1943 the heroic leaders of the revolt at Sobibor, Sasha Perchersky and Leon Feldhendler, implored fellow prisoners to promise that anyone who survived would tell the story of Sobibor: not just of the horrific atrocities committed there, but of the courage and humanity of those who fought back, Bialowitz has kept that promise.--Book Jacket Bialowitz, Philip / 1925- Bialowitz, Philip 1925- Bialowitz, Philip 1925-2016 (DE-588)143297716 gnd rswk-swf Sobibor (Concentration camp) Sobibór (Concentration camp) Vernichtungslager Sobibór (DE-588)4254373-3 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1939-1945 gnd rswk-swf BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Historical bisacsh HISTORY / Holocaust bisacsh Juden Judenvernichtung Weltkrieg (1939-1945) Jews Poland Izbica Lubelska Biography Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Poland Personal narratives Concentration camp escapes Poland Sobibór Concentration camp inmates Poland Sobibór Biography World War, 1939-1945 Jewish resistance Judenverfolgung (DE-588)4028814-6 gnd rswk-swf Polen Polen (DE-588)4046496-9 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content Polen (DE-588)4046496-9 g Judenverfolgung (DE-588)4028814-6 s Geschichte 1939-1945 z 1\p DE-604 Vernichtungslager Sobibór (DE-588)4254373-3 b 2\p DE-604 Bialowitz, Philip 1925-2016 (DE-588)143297716 p 3\p DE-604 Bialowitz, Joseph 1974- (DE-588)143298194 aut Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-299-24800-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-299-24800-0 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=332985 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
