Summary
Health, illness and therapy in the society of Polish-Lithuanian
Commonwealth in the XVI-XVIII centuries
Attitude towards health and illness is one of the key components of the hu-
man mentality and is considered to be an important factor influencing both
the social and the cultural reality. Investigation of this subject requires care-
fulness as the complicated cultural reality of the past leads modern scientists
to significant problems at the stage of its interpretation. Health, healing and
medicine in early modern period were strictly bonded with the metaphysical
aspects of human existence, their interpretation out of the religious and mag-
ical context appears strongly misleading. Illness, as a phenomenon that could
not be controlled and only barely restrained was perceived to be beyond hu-
man decisions. As a result dichotomous treatment was carried out - applying
medical attention, completed by parallel spiritual means. Christianity with its
attentiveness to afterlife determined the attitude to illness and death, as well as
introduced range of disease fighting and suffer coping methods. Nevertheless
medicine of that times offered science-based methods of treatment which
were accepted by religion and trusted by patients.
In the investigated period the humoral pathology was a guideline for the
entire university medicine. Author presents most common methods of treat-
ment and medicaments as well as opinions on their efficiency among patients.
Most of the therapies based on the humoralism and its interpretation of hu-
man body, although some medications may have empirically-derived back-
ground. Patients trustful belief in doctors and their therapies, lays in surprising
contradiction to the low efficiency of XVI—XVIII century medicine and bad
opinions on physicians. This attitude had immensely increased possibility of
gaining therapeutical effect thanks to the placebo effect. As a scientific phe-
nomenon by that time it was neither described nor understood, nevertheless
it s effects were observed. Both physicians and non professional healers were
aware of it. Therefore the reliability of a doctor was an extremely important
factor that actually determined chances of a successful therapy.
The society of Polish—Lithuanian Commonwealth in the XVI-XVIII cen-
turies presented a very open attitude towards people affected with illness and

accepted sickness as a inevitable element of the reality. Classification of an
individual as sick was based on its inability to fulfil the role in society. The
factor that caused the social malfunction was of no concern, as both petty
disorder (as hangover) as well as serious illness or injuries were an acceptable
explanation. Regardless tolerance towards sickness there were some particular
diseases and physical disabilities that were shameful or even provoked social
ostracism.
In the light of the modern medicine most of the humoral methods and
medicaments were of little therapeutical value. Although, what is extremely
noteworthy, they were often regarded by patients as efficient and caused gen-
eral health improvement. The complexity of the healing process is shown on
a brief analysis of few medical treatment examples. Presented procedures and
methods which would be nowadays classified as clearly ineffective and futile,
turned out to be successful. Although this problem is well known to modern
medicine, still there is a strong tendency to trust only clinically proven effects
and reject other attempts to increase the effectiveness of a therapy.
The book is divided into four main chapters, introduction and conclusion.
The first chapter is a brief description of the early modern medicine. It also
shows theories of aetiology of the disease and attitude towards health. The
second chapter presents the most important methods of therapy. The third
chapter represents the relation between doctor and patient as well as opinions
and reliance on the therapy. The last, fourth chapter, is dedicated to the role of
religion and magic in healing and medicine. The appendix is a specification of
all preserved Polish printed medical guidebooks from XVII-XVIII centuries.
