OUTLINE THE HISTORY
OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LODZ
1945-2015
(summary)
The 70 years of the history of Łódź University have been presented
in four chapters. The first chapter focuses on the issues of its foundation,
development and expansion in the years 1945-2015. These aspects have
been discussed in reference to the consecutive terms of office of the Łódź
University rectors. The foundation period, from February till the 24ih
of May 1945, was directly connected with the involvement of Professor
Teodor Vieweger, the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the State
University in Łódź (Komitet Organizacyjny Uczelni Państwowej w Łodzi).
Professor Vieweger, who had held the position of the rector of the Free
Polish University in Warsaw (Wolna Wszechnica Polska w Warszawie)
and its Łódź division during the interwar period, played a crucial role
in the process of the foundation of Łódź University. Alas, Professor never
lived to see the official foundation of the university as he had died tragi-
cally in a car accident on the 22nd of May 1945, just two days before the fo-
undation decree was issued.
Between 1945 and 1949 further development of the University of Łódź
was performed under the rectorship of Professor Tadeusz Kotarbiński,
a renowned logician and philosopher, who supported the idea of a liberal
university, with the main motto for students and professors being 'truth
and liberty'. Professor Kotarbinski's term of office was marked by an ex-
ceptionally dynamic growth of the University of Łódź. In 1949 the number
of students exceeded 9,000, with the professorial-level staff of 100, inclu-
ding 53 full and 47 associate professors.
Unfortunately, the years to come - under the rectorship of two re-
putable sociologists: Professor Józef Chałasiński and Professor Jan Szcze-
pański - brought a very serious crisis in the development of the uni-
versity. As a result of the policy implemented by the central authorities
Łódź University was perceived as a higher-education institution of lesser

importance, whose role was chiefly to educate ordinary employees. This
resulted in the majority of professors leaving for Warsaw, mainly to join
the ranks of Warsaw University. Thus, by 1953 the majority of humanities
faculties had been closed and the number of students in 1956 dropped
to approximately 1,500.
The revival of Łódź University as a research institution did not come
until 1956, when - due to substantial political changes - Professor Adam
Szpunar, a prominent civil lawyer, was chosen for two consecutive terms
in the years 1956-1962. Under his direction the majority of humanities
faculties were re-established, the vocational courses were liquidated
and the modern university library was erected. In the late 1960's, and more
precisely in 1968, the dynamic growth of the university was obstructed
by the so called 'March events'.
The political demonstration by Łódź University students supporting
their politically harassed colleagues at Warsaw University served as a pre-
text to expel several prominent academics from Łódź University, inclu-
ding its then rector, Professor Józef Stanisław Piątowski. Political restric-
tions were also imposed upon the leaders of student protests.
In the 1970's, under the rectorships of Professor Janusz Górski and Pro-
fessor Romuald Skowroński, Łódź University witnessed substantial gro-
wth, with the number of students exceeding 19,000 in 1978. At that time
the scientific staff from the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences, the Fa-
culty of Mathematics, the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry as well
as the Faculty of Economics and Sociology actively participated in depart-
mental and governmental research.
The years 1980-1981 were marked by the active political involve-
ment of both students and academic staff. The strike, initiated in January
and February 1981 by Łódź students, supported by some of their teachers
and by their colleagues from other academic centres in Poland, was par-
ticularly important at that time, as it resulted not only in the foundation
of the Independent Students' Association (Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studen-
tów), but also in the limited extension of autonomy of higher-education
institutions in the country.
Unfortunately, the students striking at the Faculty of Law and Ad-
ministration in Łódź, as well as some academic and administrative staff
members, were brutally assaulted by the Motorized Reserves of the Citi-
zens' Militia (Zmotoryzowane Odwody Milicji Obywatelskiej). As a re-
sult, several dozen students and a few staff members of Łódź University
were interned by the Communist authorities.
The 1980's were generally a difficult period in the history of Łódź Uni-
versity. The rectors of that time - Professor Jerzy Wróblewski and Profes-
sor Leszek Wojtczak - showed great courage and dignity in their dealin-

gs with the Communist authorities and, therefore, the academic society
survived the decade without any major conflicts or internal tensions. Be-
tween 1981 and 1990 the total number of students decreased from ap-
proximately 17,000 to slightly below 12,000. It is also worth remembe-
ring that in the late 1980's, academic society in Poland requested extended
autonomy and our rector, Professor Leszek Wojtczak, played a crucial
role in the process, eventually being elected Chairman of the reviving
Conference of Rectors of Universities in Poland (Konferencja Rektorów
Uniwersytetów Polskich). The political transition in 1989-1990 and the fo-
undation of the independent Republic of Poland led to substantial chan-
ges in the organisation and functioning of the higher education system.
In the years 1990-2015, under the rectorship of, respectively, Professor Mi-
chał Seweryński, Professor Stanisław Liszewski, Professor Wiesław Puś
and Professor Włodzimierz Nykiel, the University of Łódź has become
one of the largest higher-education institutions in Poland. The number
of students grew from approximately 12,000 in 1991 to 45,000 in 2005, only
to decrease to 35,000 in the following years due to the so called 'baby bust'.
At the same time the number of faculties grew from 6 to 12. The last 25
years have been marked by an exceptionally dynamic expansion and de-
velopment of individual faculties and institutes. Nowadays all faculties
and majors can boast modern teaching premises and research facilities.
Since the 1970's the University of Łódź had expanded its scientific colla-
boration with foreign centres and institutions, but it is in the last 25 years
that the co-operation has been particularly dynamic. At the moment Łódź
University can boast more than a staggering 200 binding co-operation
agreements with higher-education schools all over the globe.
The second chapter of the presented work comprises the issues rela-
ted to the development of individual faculties of Łódź University. It de-
monstrates the genesis of each faculty, the scope of scientific and research
interest of individual departments and senior academic staff members,
and the number of students from 1945 to 2015.
The third chapter is devoted to issues regarding the social and politi-
cal activities of the people constituting the academic population of Łódź
University. It presents the initiatives taken by staff members and students
against the background of historic political events in Poland, the operation
of university trade unions and political organisations, as well as the par-
ticipation of numerous employees and students in social and political life
in Poland after 1989.
The fourth chapter contains biographies of the 18 rectors of Łódź Uni-
versity, including Professor Teodor Vieweger, who - before his tragic de-
ath on the 22nd of May 1945 - had been the main initiator of the foundation
of our University between February and May 1945. Apart from Professor
