POLITICS OF CAPTIVES
Summary
Sociological text of the “Politics of Captives” monograph
represents an attempt at understanding social development,
social institutions, human behaviour, nature, and implica-
tions of our identity, social changes, politics, and our fears.
This understanding of captives’ society derives from the idea
that abstract theory can make historical-empiric material
talk. The idea of examination of the content of captivity is
not a new one. Its novelty has its roots in the ideas that are
more than two hundred years old. If I recall Michel Foucault,
I can trace its root in jail His practices and theories spread
to other social areas of the “enclosed archipelago”, as well.
His sadomasochist practice is difficult to understand, yet it is
even harder to justify its phenomenology. Globalization leads
to separation of economy and society, it brings about destruc-
tion of the very idea of society, development of disciplinary
power and discrepancy of the disciplinary society, especially
today when this new “ideology of the desire” to enter the EU is
current together with proving that we belong to the European
identity. In case of Serbia, it is not as vital as to see it grow
and destroy the metaphysics of the insecurity of the politics
of captives of the date and permanent crisis of the “end of
ideology ”, “end of history”, entering into the “age of identity”
of the World that is to be created anew. A trademark of such a
practice of (de)construction is systemic torture, accompanied
by disreputation of restoration of capitalism of robbers or
gangsters, “the society of organized irresponsibility”, “the so-
ciety of organized robbery” or “organized anarchy”. It is about
the restoration of peripheral politics of capitalism, a sort of
return to the close of 19**1 century, to colonialism, free trade,
and free media.
I analyze this this “return” as the politics of captives,
the pact of (re)mythology and cultural tardiness, the culture

of defeat, a tardy nation, the problem of democratic institu-
tionalization, a long tradition of poor spiritual and material
resources, a consequence of the damage left by wasted op-
portunities, wrong political frames, that consequentially in-
hibit development and modernization of a society. Serbian
society has often circulated inside the captivity circle. It has
always been a sort of “penal colony” through creation of a
system that resembles medieval feudal society, by expanding
the “black holes” in which people make a living through help
from the outside, smuggling, and other illegal activities. What
has been in force is the alchemy of the politics of captives or
captives of politics of a poor peripheral society, unrecognized
heritage of desire (political, economic and cultural), hatred
(conflicts and identity wars), and fear. The society does not
reflect its feelings. The ones who believe these promises are
quickly recognized as fools. It is about plain survival. It is
about a world whose structure is made upon bureaucracy
and hierarchy, upon alienation and ideology. The decor that
surrounds us is devoted to all this drama. Some people lose
their affinity towards surprise, and others have never even
experienced it. They know the price of everything but they do
not know the value of anything. This favors development of
depression and harmfully affects the society.
The politics of captives is a form of sacrifice of the fu-
ture. It has functioned for a long time. Its bad ideas and bad
politics still function and deeply permeate Serbian political
culture even at times when it faces bankruptcy, economic
disaster and the culture of defeat. The fear of captivity leads
to us being captives of the world we are to “conquer”, the
tactics we are to devise, the ideology we are to formulate in
the clash of sociological reality and national myth, in the col-
lision between social stigmatization of the talented and the
reign of the mediocre, the demand for a change and perma-
nent resistance to social changes. This resistance is accom-
panied by media manipulation and indoctrination as well as
by social orthodoxy of controlled democracy (reforms) and the
history captured by positivism/ empiricism. Its most ardent
advocates have this snobbish attitude filled with contempt
towards sociology, even when they “recognize” the importance
of its innovations for history.

Therefore, the Politics of Captives does not represent ne-
gation of the society but it tries to perceive and understand
what this society of captivity actually looks like within the
social intersection of the local and global, where this sense of
community does not exist. Within the experiment of social en-
gineering, we are all, in the end, captives of identity clashes,
of clashes between myths and mythology, violence, politics of
violence or violence of politics, poltroon literature, ideology,
social stigma, especially stigmatization of the talented, me-
dia manipulation, politics of fear or fear of politics, controlled
reform, defeat culture, knowledge industry and history. All
these aspects of analysis compose the content of the subject
of this monograph. It is structured in three parts. The first
part is Identity, myth, violence; the second part is Literature,
ideology, stigma; and the third part is Fear, culture of defeat,
history. Each part comprises three sociological experiments.
The common idea that illuminates each of the parts is the
idea that suggests that the issue of politics can always over-
shadow the reality, and that a model of domination always
lies in the core of the politics of captives. The society has not
yet found a reliable cure against its folly even though it has
continuously preached the maintenance of the ideal neces-
sity.
This monograph is not a lament over transitional and de-
mographic depression and the conspiracy theory, but it aims
to point out the fact that we ourselves are to be responsible
and ashamed because we give in this “captivity” and face the
inhumane circumstances of it, too easily. It also represents
an attempt at explanation and support, based on arguments
and distinctions, freed from preacher, as much as possible; it
is a warning to beware the filthy captivity. Of course, it is so
much more than that as it wishes to raise new questions and
elevate the level of discussion. Its understanding, attention,
should it raise, and interest as well as criticism, are surely,
something I would leave to others to evaluate.

( 1980), а Факултет политичких наука — група друштве-
но-политичка, у Веограду (1985) с просечном оценом
9,71, студент генерацще. Магистрирао на правносо֊
циолошком емеру (1996) на Правном факултету у Бео-
граду, а докторирао (2003) на Филозофском факулте-
ту у KocoBCKoj Митровиди. 06jaBHO je кіьиге Косово
измеЬу поретка и аномьде (2008), Вредност и насилие
(2009), и веііи 6poj чланака у часописима и зборници-
ма српске, и периодике бивших jyrocÀoBeHCKHx репу-
блика. Учествовао на више меїународних и домаЬих
научних скупова и конферендща. Истраживач на два
домаѣа научноистраживачка npojeKTa. Сада je ван-
редни професор на Катедри за социологиу Филозоф-
ског факултета Универзитета у Приштини са привре-
меним седиштем у Косовское Митровици. Средиште
свог научно-стручног рада усмерио je на политичка
разматраіьа и макросоциолошка интересовала.
