Sustainability and the role of Geomorphology
edited by Paul Hudson, Andrew Goudie Asfawossen Asrat
Characterizing human impacts on landscapes and geomorphology is essential to sustainabili-
ty science. Additional research is required to formally evaluate the effectiveness of various en-
vironmental plans which have been implemented by government agencies. Geomorphologists
possess the conceptual framework and methodological tools required to guide allied scientists
and policy makers to implement effective management measures to achieve environmental
sustainability.
The eleven papers of this special issue characterize past and present human impacts on land-
scapes and geomorphological processes.
The contributions stem from a variety of subfields of geomorphology which study landscape
change from different angles, including field, modeling, and historic-based approaches. The
collection of papers is comprised of conceptual and applied studies. Particularly, it includes
research which examines the integration of geomorphological approaches with environmental
management and policy.
The reviewed contributions in this volume were presented at the 8th Congress of the Interna-
tional Association of Geomorphology (IAG), entitled Geomorphology and Sustainability, held
August 2013 in Paris.
This volume is of interest to physical geographers and geomorphologists concerned with sus-
tainability and change.
