The recent proliferation of new media, software and graphic approaches has made representation a minefield in
architecture. This book restores the instrumentality of drawing by providing students of architecture and urban
design, as well as young practitioners, with an instructive drawing and research manual. It focuses on the
what, how and why of representation and analysis. What, for instance, are the most important types of drawings
to represent, compare and analyse a spatial project or argument in architecture? And how do you go about
selecting them? The book instructively explains the conventions of drawings and diagrams and the integral part
they play in the analysis and representation of an architectural or urban project.
Drawing is an important means to analyse information and develop rigorous arguments both conceptually and
visually. Going beyond the how-to drawing manual, this book provides an instrumental approach to drawing,
especially computer-generated drawings; it outlines how drawings should be used to convey clear and
analytical information in the process of design, as well as the communication and discussion of a project.
In-depth examples are provided on how to communicate effectively. The final section demonstrates how to
graphically represent case studies, directly connecting an analytical approach with the design process.

Sam Jacoby (AA Dip, Dr-lng, ARB, RIBA) is a chartered architect and educator with 11 years of experience
teaching design studios at undergraduate and graduate level. He is Director of the MPhil in Architecture
and Urban Design (Projective Cities) programme at the Architectural Association School of Architecture and
Teaching Fellow on the MArch Urban Design, Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL).
He has previously taught at the University of Nottingham and worked for various architectural and planning
offices in the UK, USA and Malaysia.
