| adam_text | Future Directions of Municipal Solid
Waste Management in Africa
Transformation and rapid population growth in Africa indicates that urbanisation is one of the key
determinants of the future of social dynamics and development of the continent. Linked to these changes
are increased production levels of Municipal Solid Waste. This book provides recommendations and
solutions that derive from current situations, experiences and observations in Africa. This book is a
must read for urban planners, environmental engineering students and lecturers, environmental
consultants and policy-makers. The book can also be of great help to municipal authorities, as it outlines
future directions of Municipal Solid Waste management. These need to be considered by the municipal
authorities of most African countries.
About the Editors
Professor Romeela Mohee is the Vice- Chancellor of the University of Mauritius. She holds an Engineering
degree in Energy and Environment from La Grande Ecole d ingénieurs, institut National des Sciences
Appliquées Lyon, France and a PhD from the University of Mauritius (which was awarded in collaboration
with the Clemson University in the United States of America under a Fulbright scholarship in 19%). Prof
Mohee has 23 years of academic experience as a Professor and Head of Department in the field of Chemical
and Environmental Engineering, ns well as, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. She is a fellow of the Royal
Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom and has been invited several times as key speaker at international
workshops and conferences. She was highly involved in the Rio +20 Conference preparatory meeting for Africa.
Dr Thokozani Simelane is a programme leader for Science and Technology at the Africa Institute of South
Africa, which has been recently incorporated into Human Sciences Research Council. He holds a Master
of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy Degrees from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He has
recently submitted for examination a Doctor of Technology Thesis in industrial engineering at the Durban
University of Technology He has previously worked as manager (Environmental Management Department) at
the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, South Africa. He has published in a number of international
scientific journals and recently published two co-edited book volumes, i.e. energy transition in Africa and
Africa in a global changing environment-perspectives of climate change adaptation and irrigation strategies in
Africa. He is a member of the Standing Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property Rights of South Africa.
His research interests are on energy, complex system analysis, industrial processes analysis and environmental
management. He is the founding member of South Africa s Chapter of System Dynamics Society.
