Beschreibung:The GAMM Committee for Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations (GAMM Fachausschuß "Effiziente Numerische Verfahren für Partielle Differentialgleichungen") organizes conferences and seminars on subjects concerning the algorithmic treatment of partial differential equation problems. The two first seminars "Efficient Solution of Elliptic Systems" (1985) and "Efficient Numerical Methods in Continuum Mechanics" (1986) were followed by a third one, co-organized together with the GAMM Committee for Discretizing Methods in Solid Mechanics and the special research project SFB 2S "Vortex Flows in Aeronautics" at the RWTH Aachen, sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). During the last decades Panel Methods and Boundary Element Methods became a very efficient tool to solve numerically the integral equations with surface or boundary singularity distributions in Aerodynamics and in Continuum Mechanics. First designed for elliptic problems with linear partial differential equations, the different variants of the methods now apply to nonlinearities introduced by free vortex sheets or compressible flows and to time-dependent problems as wave propagation and non-stationary Flows. The seminar was attended by 47 scientists from 10 countries. A greater part of the 22 papers presented at the seminar concerned the different approaches for stationary and non-stationary subsonic potential flows around aerodynamic configurations and propellers, including inverse methods for design problems
