Item Description:The present Volume A 3 "Uranium" of the Gmelin Handbuch deals with the technology of uranium from its extraction from uranium ores to the manufacture of uranium-containing nuclear fuels and their use in various kinds of nuclear reactors. The behavior of and changes in nuclear fuels during nuclear reactor operation are the subject of Volume A4. Today, uranium is extracted in mining when its concentration in the ore amounts to at least 0.03% U 0 . The specific processing methods depend on the nature of the deposits. Alkaline 3 a and especially acid leaching are prominent at this time; newer processes such as in-situ or bacterialleaching are under development. The path of uranium from the ore through extraction and purification to the saleable product is described in detail for the different processes, as weil as the methods and prospects for the future winning of uranium from phosphate ores and through sea water technology, that are now only at their beginning. The technical production of important compounds embraces in particular UF for isotope s separation and U0 as a nuclear fuel for modern light water reactors. In view of their limited 2 metallurgical qualities for use as nuclear fuels, uranium metal and uranium alloys possess only minor application possibilities, while with respect to uranium carbide and uranium nitride as nuclear fuels of the future, enough experience in their technical manufacture and irradiation behavior has not yet been accumulated
