"The homeland wants and waits for help from us"
Bulgarian educational associations through
the National Revival
This study focuses on the creation and the activities of the
educational associations throughout the Bulgarian National Revival
until the Bulgarian liberation in
1878.
This period is characterized
by large-scale economic, political and cultural changes in the life
of all Bulgarians. This is a time of upsurge in the development of
new Bulgarian secular education; of mass national movements for
an independent Bulgarian church; a time of widespread unfolding
of the national liberation movement for revoking the centuries-long
Ottoman domination; and a time for restoration of the freedom and
independence of the Bulgarian State. During this period and mostly
within the third quarter of the

9th century, different cultural organi¬
zations and institutions emerged in Bulgarian society: educational
formations within churches, libraries, different scientific, female-
led, publishing and other associations, among which educational
associations. All of them embody the seeds of the emerging civil
society.
The creation and the activities of educational associations
were an expression of the growing pursuit of young Bulgarians to¬
wards obtaining more knowledge, diving into the vast world of
science and reaching the achievements of the modern civiliza¬
tion. They saw a powerful tool in knowledge that would help them
push forward the cultural development of their homeland and
achieve a better life for all Bulgarians.
According, to the available sources available, the first edu¬
cational association was founded in
1868
by Bulgarian students in
Robert college in Tsarigrad (Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman
Empire at the time, where a multitudinous Bulgarian colony existed.
Soon after, the students in the Bulgarian school in Tsarigrad as well
as those studying in other educational institutions, established their
own associations. Their example was followed by students from
many Bulgarian villages and towns
-
Gabrovo, Sliven, Plovdiv,
Stara
Zagora,
Koprivshtiza, Ruse, Svishtov,
Vidin, Panagiurishte,
Sofia,
Veles,
Lovech,
Varna, Shipka, Bebrovo
et
cetera. The Bulgarians

studying in other countries also established educational associations
-
in
Belgrad
(Serbia), Tabor (Czech Republic), Zagreb (Croatia) and
others. As a result, educational associations were established in mo¬
re than
40
towns. They all carried beautiful names such as "Pro¬
gress", "Brotherly love", "Spark", "Dawn", "Bee", "Enlighten¬
ment".
The goals pursued by the educational associations were in
three main directions:
a) giving access to more knowledge and facilitating the intel¬
lectual and ethical growth of their members by arranging lectures,
discourses and discussions of current scientific and civil questions;
by creating libraries, and by arranging theatre plays.
b) helping the ones who need scholarships, textbooks, school
materials and clothes with funds gathered from members fees,
charities, lottery tickets,
et
cetera.
c) supporting the education of youth who do not have the
opportunity to study and encouraging their involvement in cultu¬
ral events, through facilitating their attendance of Sunday schools.
The educational associations managed to mobilize the ener¬
gy of students and to direct it towards activities with impact and
significance for the whole society. They inspired reverence towards
knowledge and science, love and respect towards labour and high
moral standards. In addition, they were raised in a democratic, pa¬
triotic spirit with a strong national identity. The majority of those
young people took part in the local revolutionary committees. Some
of them died during the anti-Ottoman rebellion in
1876.
Not by
coincidence, after the Liberation of Bulgaria in
1878
many of the
founders and activists from the educational associations became
the builders of a reconstructed Bulgarian State as its ministers, po¬
liticians, diplomats, soldiers, judges, administrators. Among them
are names such as
Constantine Stoilov,
Mihail Madjarov,
Prof.
Stefan Bobchev, Alexander Theodor-Balan, Hristofor Hesapchiev,
General
Mihail
Savov,
Theodor
Theodorov,
Dobri Minkov,
Niko¬
la Suknarov, Krustio Mirski,
Toma Vasiliov,
and others.
The educational associations founded during the Bulgar¬
ian National Revival are considered very active and modern for
their time cultural public organizations, which introduced tradi¬
tions related to high moral values, and left a powerful example
for the generations to come.
