The Archaeology of the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle in Szczecin
The primary objective of this work was the
collection of all possible materials acquired dur-
ing the many years of excavations of the castle, the
analysis of stratification, the formal and chrono-
logical examination of finds as well as the deter-
mination of its origins and stages of development.
The excavations of the castle started in 1947
under Józef Marciniak and Tadeusz Wieczo-
rowski acting on behalf of the City Museum.
From 1952 to 1954, they were continued by
T. Wieczorowski within the research programme
of the Polish State millennium. Later, from 1954
until 1973, in the initial phase of the castle’s re-
construction, supervision and minor conservation
work were undertaken by Marian Rulewicz and
Stefan Wesołowski, employees of the Archaeologi-
cal Station of the Institute of History of Material
Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In the
years 1967-1968 and then in 1974-1977, the field-
work was undertaken by Ryszard Rogosz and Eu-
geniusz Cnotliwy from the Study of Archaeology
and Conservation of the State Enterprise Stud-
ies for Heritage Conservation, Szczecin Section.
The documentation and materials from these
excavations are held in different places. Some
are in the possession of the Archaeological Study
of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology
of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Szczecin
and others, from the excavations run by the Study
of Archaeology and Conservation of the State En-
terprise Studies for Heritage Conservation, are in
the archives of the State Service for Monuments
Protection, Szczecin Section — in the National
Museum in Szczecin and in the Regional Centre
for Research and Documentation in Szczecin.
The first part of this study presents the exca-
vation results from a number of trenches within
the castle (Fig. 2), but essentially only from layers
dated to the period from roughly the mid- 13th to
the end of the 18th century. Older settlement lev-
els from the early Middle Ages have already been
studied and published (Szczecin we wczesnym
średniowieczu. Wzgórze Zam\owe, red. E. Cnotli-
wy, L. Leciejewicz, W Łosiński, Wroclaw — War-
szawa — Krakow — Gdańsk — Łódź 1983). This
part details the characteristics of the layers and ar-
tefacts related to the history of the castle.
Part II details the documentation of features
associated with the stratigraphy that was recorded
in various trenches. These are primarily defined
in chronological terms and include numero-
us architectural remains, sanitary, sewerage and
water supply installations. All are presented in
Figure 176.
Further analytical parts of this work corre-
spond to the major periods of the castle’s history.
They are often quite sharply distinguished by the
well-dated remains of original constructions and
the related layers. In contrast, it is difficult to con-
nect them with all the various elements of mate-
rial culture, within which the older ones survive
longer, crossing designated chronological bounda-
ries of the identified periods. This resulted mainly
from ground levelling work associated with dif-
ferent phases of the construction.
Part III is devoted to the analysis of layers and
artefacts from the period between 1250 and 1346.
The key issue of this period is the rise and sub-
sequent history of the ducal manor. Taking into
consideration the written sources, already at
the beginning of the period there was a manor
house in Szczecin that was periodically used by
Warcisław (Wartislaw) I. It was probably founded
shortly before the Christianizing mission, after the
capture of the city by the Polish duke, Bolesław
Krzywousty (Wrymouth) in 1121/22. It was also
mentioned by St Otto of Bamberg’s chroniclers.
Ebbo defines it as ‘sedes ducis’ or ‘in arxem ducis’
and places it ‘in montem Triglavi’, while Herbord
describes it as ‘curia ducis’ or ‘pallacium’. Triglav
Hill is identified today as Castle Hill, i.e. the area
of the current castle along with its north-western
part. Warcislaw’s manor area was situated next to
the early medieval fortifications of Szczecin, large-
ly occupying the central part of the present north
wing (Fig. 178). In the archaeological excavations
to-date no material remains of Warcislaw’s and
his immediate successors’ seat were identified.
Only Warcislaw’s great-grandson Barnim I,
probably in connection with the preparation for
the city’s incorporation, began to stay more often
in Szczecin in the third decade of the 13 th century.
He also more frequently signed important docu-
ments here. Finally, about 1235, and no later than
in 1243 he moved his permanent headquarters
from Uznam (Usedom) to Szczecin. The great-
grandfather’s old manor was not in good condi-
tion, and additionally it did not meet the multiple
needs of the community. It required serious reno-
vation and likely a thorough reconstruction as well
as, perhaps, also a wider area. The momentum of
works related to the construction of the new ducal

south wing. The more interesting finds included
fragments of a richly decorated crossbow, manu-
factured by masters from Augsburg in south Ger-
many (Figs. 45 and 46). Amongst several small
items recovered were a bronze spoon (Fig. 61)
and clay pipes imported from the Netherlands
(Figs. 22:2 and 60:6).
Tableware and glass drinking vessels are fre-
quently represented. A particularly large number
of fragments come from tall, cylindrical and po-
lygonal flute-type beakers (Fig. 85). There were
also numerous shorter, cylindrical beakers, among
which painted specimens were particularly note-
worthy. On one of them, bearing the date 1618 are
the coats of arms of Duke Francis I and his wife
Sophia, a daughter of the Elector of Saxony on it
(Fig. 84:1). Another one has the coat of arms of
the Electors of Brandenburg (Fig. 84:3). Paint-
ed decoration was also found on some of the
conical beakers (Fig. 84:2). Amongst the bea-
kers’ fragments there were also ones of the
‘Krautstrunk’ type (Fig. 85:8) and the ‘Roemer’
type (Figs. 85:9-10). The assemblage of bea-
kers is complemented by a variety of goblets
with high stems and knot, clover or ovoid bowls
(Fig. 86). There were also, unfortunately only pre-
served in fragments, fancy goblets of the Venetian
type, but probably from workshops in the Nether-
lands (Fig. 86:1, 2).
A specific group is composed of glass me-
dicinal vessels, containers for various ointments
(Fig. 90), small bottles for herbal extracts (Figs.
98 and 99) as well as jars for medicines’ prepara-
tion (Figs. 91 and 95). They are enriched by ce-
ramic containers, mainly stoneware ones, among
which the ones belonging to type I (Figs. 101:1, 2
and 103) and type II (101:3) were identified. They
were imported from famed workshops in Frank-
furt (Oder) and Waldenburg but there were also
tin-glazed earthenware (faience) vessels, dated
to the first half of the 17th century from Arnstadt
(Figs. 80:4; 101:4 and 104).
There was also a large assemblage of bottles for
wine and other alcoholic beverages. A few bottles
of type I (Fig. 87:1, 2) and numerous ones of type
II (Figs. 87:3 and 6) characterized by having bod-
ies circular in section, and the most numerous
tetrahedral ones of type III (Fig. 87:7) as well as
a small number of fragments of polygonal speci-
mens of type IV were all recorded. Particularly
noteworthy is large bottle of type III, variety 2,
with the date 1615 and rich, colourful painted
decoration in the form of several scenes provided
with appropriate inscriptions (Figs. 88-90).
A rich and functionally diverse assemblage
of pottery, mainly originating from local work-
shops but also more sophisticated, imported table
stoneware was recovered from the castle latrines.
It should be noted that finds from Szczecin cas-
tle do not allow researchers to track the increase
of changes in the technique of pottery produc-
tion possibly from the end of the 14th century
(the issue of the spread of the fast wheel throw-
ing), application of glazes (spread in the 16th cen-
tury) and the emergence of new forms of vessels
adapted to more differentiated functions. Neither
the layers belonging to the end of the period - to
1575, nor to the following ones provided such op-
portunities. The vast majority of finds come from
the castle latrines, i.e. from fills created prob-
ably already in the first half of the 16th century.
As a result, we are dealing with fully formed as-
semblages in terms of new technologies and
functional needs. It should also be noted that the
current state of research on Western Pomeranian
pottery from the period between the beginning
of the 16th century and the end of the 18th makes
the precise dating of vessels impossible. Hence, it
is still difficult to distinguish with certainty forms
from the period to the mid-17th century and later
specimens. Many forms were used successfully to
the end of the 18th century.
An overview of the basic forms of local vessels
as well as the types of clay is presented in Table
No. 34. The most numerous are pots grouped in
12 types (Figs. 64 and 65; Table 36). Until 1637,
but in fact until the mid-17th century, pots of types
II, IV, variety 1, VII, X, XI and XII could have
been used, and the rest also in the 18th century.
Amongst the 7 types of skillets (Fig. 66) only type
I, varieties 2 and 3, can be more confidently said
to have been used until 1637. Pans were also long-
lasting (Fig. 67). Tablewares were numerous:
bowls (Fig. 68), plates (Fig. 69), jugs (Fig. 70:1-3),
mugs (Fig. 70:5-9), tankards (Fig. 70:11) and cups
(Fig. 70:10). Amongst the 7 types of bowls, types
I, III (varieties 1 and 2) and V can be dated to the
16th - first half of the 17th century, the others also
occur later. Amongst the jugs, only varieties 1-3
can be placed in the mid-17th century.
Part VI deals with the period after 1637 almost
until the 19th century. Archaeological excavations
302
The Archaeology of the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle in Szczecin
also provided interesting information about this
period. After the death of Bogislaw ХЩ the last
duke of the House of Griffins, Szczecin and the
castle passed into Swedish possession and later
from 1720, it belonged to Prussia. In the Swed-
ish period in the north-east corner of the Mint
Courtyard, a small building of unknown func-
tion was built. It is known from Zeuner’s draw-
ing from 1773 (Fig. 186) and its existence was
confirmed by excavations in trench VII (marked
as feature No. 17). From features and layers as-
sociated with this period a considerable amount
of archaeological materials, mainly pottery, was
acquired. They represent usually long-lasting
forms, which - with the current state of knowl-
edge - cannot be conclusively identified as ones
belonging to the time before 1637 from the later
ones, already coming from the Swedish period.
In contrast, the material from Prussian times is
easier to identify although forms created earlier
were still in use. An undoubted signum tem-
poris is a stove tile with the royal initials ‘FR’
(Fig. 109). Prussian rule is documented by,
amongst others, clay pipes from workshops in
Weissenspring and Roscin that developed espe-
cially after 1754, when Frederick the Great effec-
tively stopped the inflow of Dutch products by
means of customs duties.
A large assemblage consists of porcelain ves-
sels originating almost exclusively from the royal
manufactory in Berlin. They probably date from
after 1771 and belonged to Elisabeth of Bruns-
wick, the wife of Frederick William II. After their
separation, she resided in Szczecin castle from
1769 until her death in 1840. Amongst the ta-
blewares belonging to her were six sets of Berlin
crockery and four dessert sets of Far East porce-
lain or its European imitation fashionable at that
time were identified. Against the above back-
ground a relatively modest collection of faience
vessels, mainly plates (some of them of so-called
‘Stettiner Ware’), jugs and drug containers were
also identified.
There was a significant decrease in the amount
of stoneware, amongst which only occasional
specimens came from the Rhineland centres
(Westerwald — Fig. 25:2) and all others from Up-
per Lusatian workshops, located within the Prus-
sian state.
In terms of local pottery products, the glazed
brick-red wheel thrown vessels were still pro-
duced and used. They were mainly pots, skillets,
plates and bowls. Pots in forms already known
were still used: types I-VI, VIII and IX, but not
types VII, X, XI and XII. In the group of skil-
lets the representatives of types II, VI and VII
and some varieties of types I, IV and V are miss-
ing. Only bowls of types III and IV and — with
the exception of type II — all other types of plates
remained in use.
At this point, we complete the presentation
and analysis of features and the rich, diverse ar-
chaeological material forming a compendium of
current archaeological knowledge about the cas-
tle. The rescue excavations conducted recently by
Marek Dworaczyk on behalf of the Institute of
Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Acad-
emy of Sciences in the north-eastern part of the
main courtyard can only add new information to
the history of this castle.
