Resumé
The Hussite Century
The fifteenth century in Czech history is inextricably associated with the
Hussite movement, revolution, and the subsequent changes in society and
culture. For the purposes of this book, the Hussite period is defined as the
short fifteenth century, in accord with the concept that has recently estab¬
lished itself in surveys of Bohemian history. It started in
1402,
when
Jan Hus
took up the post of preacher at Bethlehem Chapel in Prague, and ends in
1485,
when the
Kutná Hora
religious peace concluded the period of disputes
and skirmishes between the Hussite and Catholic camps. The central prob¬
lem of this period is the emergence, development, and activity of the religious
and social movement that we today call Hussitism. The history of Hussitism
is not conceived in this book only as the history of the Hussite wars. The
revolt against secular and ecclesiastical authority was only the fuse for the
revolutionary processes that took place in the fifteenth century. Hussitism
is presented here as a political, cultural and social phenomenon. The origi¬
nal impulses of the ecclesiastical reform soon surpassed the narrow area of
religion in their importance. Whether under the influence of the innovative
ideas of the Hussite theoreticians, in opposition to them, or outside the direct
impact of the doctrinal disputes
-
but in every case on a chessboard changed
forever by the Hussite storms
-
phenomena emerged in the fifteenth century
that characterised Czech society oftentimes deep into the Modern Period.
The view of Hussitism, both in historiography and with the wider public,
has undergone changes. After many years of glorification brought by Marx¬
ist historiography, a retreat from fame and sometimes even condemnation
followed. The task of removing the Hussite movement from the narrow
framework of national history remained in the hands of the experts. Many
important phenomena of the Hussite period can be understood only against
the background of a wider development in medieval society within a Latin
cultural milieu. Taking into account the European context shows that some
seemingly characteristic Hussite phenomena are manifestations of a more

widespread tendency. That does not mean, however, that the contours of
Hussitism in the colourful mosaic of the European Middle Ages have blurred
or become completely lost from sight. On the contrary, precisely in com¬
parison with the developments in other countries, the unique features of the
Czech way stand out, and, taken as a whole, have no parallel in fifteenth-
century Europe.
Hussitism emerges at a time that can be characterised as a period of
complex change that in many regards significantly obfuscated the situation
in the Czech lands. Many impulses that the society was not able to treat fully
appeared suddenly and quickly. The accelerated development of civilisation
intersected with the territorial expansion of the Crown of Bohemia, but also
with the explosion of towns, the blossoming of Czech written literature, the
streamlining of the church administration, and support of education thanks
to the foundation of the university. At the moment when the growth slowed
or stopped, uncertainty increased, further compounding the effects of several
unfortunate events on the domestic and European scenes, whether the gen¬
erational change of the Bohemian elites after
1378,
the outbreak of the Papal
Schism, or the epidemics two years later.
The second half of the fourteenth century in the Bohemian environ¬
ment had already brought a new wave of piety, oriented to a great extent
on the meditation of Christ s passion, his sacrifice and the Eucharist closely
associated with that, all of which was directly linked with eschatological and
ecclesiological considerations. The increased demands for compliance with
evangelical ideals and their discrepancy with the practices of the contempo¬
rary church became a component of public debate at the turn of the century.
Great emphasis was placed on personal and universal redemption, thema-
tised inter alia in the apocalyptic images of the general crisis, the demise
and subsequent revival. The initiative in the area of ecclesiastical and social
criticism was assumed at the beginning of the fifteenth century by a group of
university Wycliffites, a group which in the end was headed by
Jan Hus.
The revolutionary wave, met with social and ideological tensions at the
end of the second decade of 15th century, set up social, religious, political,
and moral objectives that were to be achieved through spiritual and physical
battle. As with many other revolutions, the initial euphoria did not last long
even in Hussitism. Many of the ideals necessarily remained unfulfilled, but
not all were forgotten. The ideas and concepts set out by the first genera¬
tions continued to inspire the more spirited personalities of Utraquism. They
then acquired new connotations in the milieu of radical groups of which the
Unity of the Brethren asserted itself in particular. Much of the original Hus¬
site programme was translated, albeit in weakened form, to the organisation
of post-Hussite society and its conception of faith as well.
The Hussite century distinctly recast the religious arrangement of the
Czech lands. Whereas at the beginning of this period the local Christian
population officially associated within a single church, by its end the confes¬
sional situation was more complicated. An administration of the Utraquist
church was established in parallel with the existing Catholic administration.
Although the Compacts
(Compactată)
of Basel endeavoured to integrate the

into a general church, in practice each confession defined itself
against the other. At the end of the Hussite century, the confessional division
had become a reality of Bohemia and Moravia, even if an estate and cultural
belonging dominated oftentimes in social classes. After the middle of the
fifteenth century, it is possible to speak of a moderate religious tolerance and
the pragmatic coexistence of both confessions. The existence of the Hussite
church and the defence of the chalice despite the resistance of the rest of the
Western Christian world nevertheless remained the most visible result of the
Hussite storms. The Unity of the Brethren was also formed in seclusion, and
at the time still had the status of a persecuted sect. Hussitism also brought
a trend of lay interventions in religious questions and the organisation of
the church, often with a political subtext and character. The secularization
of church property, which was generally not returned in restitution even
after a settlement was found, also affected the distribution of property in the
lands in a fundamental way. This primarily influenced the economic base of
the higher and lower nobility. Moreover, towns experienced a great political
emancipation when their social character and political influence was trans¬
formed significantly during the Hussite period. Sovereign power, shaken by
the revolution, remained markedly weakened even at the end of the fifteenth
century; the positions of urban and particularly noble estate corporations
were reinforced.
This book is divided into four sections. The two central parts deal with social
and cultural history, hence the fields of historical research that have in recent
times enjoyed the most intensive interest by historians. They attempt to cover
the issue in the broadest thematic spectrum possible. The section Space and
Society thus begins with an explanation of the fates of the united lands of
the Crown of Bohemia to present subsequently the development in the indi¬
vidual lands (excluding Bohemia, which is the focus of the first and fourth
sections). Next come chapters on the Catholic Church, with a special atten¬
tion devoted to monasteries, which were affected acutely by the Hussite wars.
Next chapters deal with the nobility and towns, hence the social milieus dis¬
tinctly marked by the revolutionary events. The section is concluded by a dis¬
cussion on the Hussite military, which became iconic for the entire period.
The section on Culture begins with a chapter on the response to Hussitism
from abroad. Considerable attention is devoted understandably to religious
discourses, namely to Hussite theology and also preaching and propaganda,
and finally piety and religious practices. The next three chapters are devoted
to the area of artistic culture
-
the visual arts, music, and literature. A text on
the material culture of the Hussite period deals with aspects of everyday life.
The first and fourth sections introduce in extensive introductory chapters
the events of the period in question, divided by the year
1437
into a unit enti¬
tled Reform and Revolution and a unit on The Kingdom of Two Peoples .
In each of these sections, there are five chapters developed to capture the
phenomena which we consider to be characteristic or unique for the given

period.
For the revolutionary period, emphasis is placed on the figure of Jan
Hus
as the initiator and bearer of the eponym of the whole movement. Also
emphasised is the University of Prague, which at the beginning of Hussit-
ism functioned as its ideological centre with a distinct initiatory role. The
next three chapters deal with the crucial power formations of the revolu¬
tionary period. The first is the Tabor revolutionary commune along with the
phenomenon of Hussite radicalism, including its extreme offshoots in the
form of Chiliasm and Adamitism. Other chapters capture the political rise of
Prague and present the field armies and unions as unique organisational and
socio-political formations born from the turmoil of the Hussite wars.
The texts of the final section attempt to describe the phenomena typi¬
cal for developments after the acceptance of the Compacts. The Utraquist
church, although it grew on foundations laid in the first third of the fifteenth
century, presents itself as an internally independent organisation precisely
after the introduction of two legal faiths. On the contrary, the Unity of the
Brethren, an original fruit of the Hussite period, was to collide constantly
with the letter of the Compacts. After two chapters devoted to church mat¬
ters at the time of the confessional split, there is a treatise dealing with the
division of the Crown of Bohemia under the reign of two kings
-
George of
Poděbrady
followed by Vladislaus II in Bohemia and Matthias Corvinus in
the other lands. The movement of the constitutional development is captured
by a chapter discussing the emerging estate system, whereas the penetration
of novelties in the area of culture and education is followed in a discourse
on humanism. These are the phenomena and tendencies that the Hussite
century bequeathed to later epochs.
