The Story of the Wife of the Second Czechoslovak President (1885-1974) is the first li¬ terary biography of the wife of Edvard Beneš, one of the most important statesmen of the 20th century. In Czech cultural memory, she remains the unrivalled ideal of a First Lady. The author sketches Benešová s biography mainly on the basis of primary archival sources - her cor¬ respondence, diaries and official documents. He also draws from extensive secondary literature, mem¬ oirs, and eyewitness reports, bringing together facts and facets of the topic rather unknown until today. The author focuses mainly on the problematic relationship between Benešová s private and public life. To what extent did one influence the other? In what way did Hana Benešová take part in the political activities of her husband? The book shows that her part was substantial - due to her participation in the political resistance of her husband, she was e.g. imprisoned during WWI. After 1918, she becomes the confidante and something like a P.A. to the - then - minister of foreign affairs, and later the president. In 1938, she follows him into the exile and struggles for the restitution of Czechoslovakia. In the short period until the communist coup in 1948, Benešová becomes one of the symbols of pre-war Czechoslovakia. She devotes the last 25 years of her life after her husband s death to the custody of his legacy and remembrance. The book thus introduces Hana Benešová as an exceptional woman through whose life we can achieve better knowledge of the complex history of the 20th century. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Hana Benešová (1885-1974) gilt im kollektiven Gedächtnis der Tschechen immer noch als das Ideal einer „First Lady . Die außergewöhnliche Geschichte der Frau des zweiten tschechoslowakischen Prä¬ sidenten ist die erste Buch-Biographie der Frau von Edvard Beneš, eines der bedeutendsten europäis¬ chen Staatsmänner des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Autor rekonstruiert den Lebenslauf von Hana Benešová vor allem anhand primärer Archivqu- ellen - ihrer Korrespondenz, Tagebücher und amtlicher Dokumente. Er berücksichtigt die umfangre¬ iche Sekundärliteratur zum Thema und die Erinnerungen von Zeitzeugen in seiner Darstellung. Das Buch bringt somit zahllose unbekannte Tatsachen zum Thema ein. Die Biografie konzentriert sich vor allem auf das Problem der Beziehung zwischen Benešovás privatem und öffentlichem Leben. Inwieweit war das eine beeinflusst vom anderen? Und wie sehr nahm Hana Benešová an der politischen Tätigkeit ihres Mannes teil? Das Buch zeigt, dass ihr Anteil sehr markant war: wegen ihrer Beteiligung an politischen Widerstandsaktivitäten ihres Gatten wurde sie z.B. während des ersten Weltkriegs gefangen gesetzt. Nach 1918 wurde sie die Vertraute und eine Art Privatsekretärin des Außenministers und später Präsidenten. Mit ihm ging sie in 1938 ins Exil und kämpfte um die Wiederherstellung der Tschechoslowakei. In der kurzen Periode bis zum kom¬ munistischen Putsch wurde sie zu einem der Symbole des Vorkriegs Staates. Die letzten 25 Jahre ihres Lebens nach dem Tode ihres Gatten weihte sie der Pflege seines politischen Erbes und Andenkens. Das Buch stellt Hana Benešová als eine außergewöhnliche Frau dar, durch deren Schicksal wir die verwickelte tschechische Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts besser kennenlernen können. 287
