Summary
This book contains four relatively independent parts united by the dis¬
cussion of the history of the early Slavonic Office Menaion.
The writing of the first chapter Origin of the Daily Slavonic Menaia
(Based on the Offices for December)" was provoked by the existence of
numerous hypotheses regarding the origin of this variety of the Menaion.
While they discuss mostly general cultural and historical facts and argu¬
ments, the first chapter of this book analyses the early copies of December
Menaion, that vary in character and origin, and draws conclusions about
the time and place of the completion of December Menaion in medieval
Slavonic cultures applying linguistic and textual approaches. The data from
the text-transmission of the offices is allocated in two groups. The first one
includes lexical and morphological variants that are indicative of the ori¬
gin of the translation. A number of archaisms and locally marked lexemes
indicate that the offices in the earliest layer of December Menaion were
translated in the framework of the activities of the disciples of
SS
Cyril and
Methodius in Bulgarian literary centres. The second group of textological
data is significant for establishing the relations between the Old Russian
and the South-Slavonic sources. This group is divided into several sub¬
groups. The errors appearing in all the copies examined show that both
archaic and revised versions (included in the Old Russian Office Menaia)
originate from a common Old Bulgarian protograph. The other subgroup
includes correct variant readings only in medieval Bulgarian and Serbian
copies of the offices under review. This suggests that these copies originate
from antigraphs, which were written before the time of the occurrence of
the textual deformations mentioned above. A significant evidence of the
Old Bulgarian origin of the Slavonic version of the full December Menaion
are the correct variant readings in Serbian (and also in specific Old Rus¬
sian) Menaia in the latest layer of services

against the mistake common
for the standard East Slavonic codices. The material is used to characterize
individual manuscripts and their relevant textual interconnections. The
lack of textual homogeneity in the Old Russian December Menaia, which

is a result of the influence of the previous tradition of the texts, shows that
these sources reflect a late and relatively well established stage, marked by
certain unification.
The second chapter of the book, entitled "Lexical Variants in the
Hymnographic Texts: Textual and Stylistic Aspects", reviews the synon¬
ymy in the representation of certain lexical components characteristic for
the hymnography (compound words with first components
φωτ-/φωσ-,
ευ-,
composite denoting specific qualifications of Saints, derivatives with
a-privativum,
and some others). The Slavonic equivalents are not inter¬
preted solely as a sign of a certain translation concept which is indicative of
the time and place where the translation were produced (see the differen¬
tiation in literature: archaic variant
-
Presláv
variant
-
neutral variant), but
also in terms of the Rhetoric specificities of the Byzantine original and the
Biblical and Christian formulary structure of the poetic text. The conclu¬
sions made show similar trends in the representation of a number of lexical
models
-
from non-literal translation searching mostly for the rendition of
the sense through analytical combinations to different forms of loan trans¬
lations. The preconditions for such a development are sought for, on one
hand
-
in the social and cultural environment, and on the other
-
in the
character of the Old Bulgarian literary language. The free and contextual
translations in the early stage of Slavonic written culture were adapted to
the needs of the congregation which at that time was still characterized by
an insufficient level of Christian education and which perceived orally the
poetic words in the temple. This translation technique, however, resulted
in a lower level of rhetorical sophistication of the text and often even com¬
pletely destroyed or at least obscured the stylistic figures of the Byzantine
originals. The introduction later of the various types of morphemic trans¬
lation had two significant consequences: it reproduced the style richness
of the Byzantine poetry and at the same time contributed to the establish¬
ment of the poetic style of the Old Bulgarian language.
The third chapter "To the Reconstruction of the Set of Old Bulgarian
Office Menaia: Codex
Sof.

of the National Library of Russia (12th-13th
century)" focuses on a single and rather overlooked manuscript of signifi¬
cant interest. It has been analysed from three standpoints (its calendar, the
content of the offices in it, and their linguistic and textological specifici¬
ties) in order to localize and date its protogrpah. The analysis of the com¬
memorations in the context of a wide variety of Slavonic and Greek calen¬
dars shows that the Byzantine original of the major part of this Menaion

(mostly the offices for commemorations of relatively low status) is of the
Constantinopolitan type. The composition and language of the hymns in
the archaic nucleus (the offices for St. George the Megalomartyr and for St.
Mark the Evangelist) indicate the connections of codex
Sof.

to the ear¬
liest Old Bulgarian hymnographic tradition. The textological features of
the later layer in the manuscript analysed reveal the combination of earlier
characteristics and
Presláv
innovations. Judging from the data presented,
we could view codex
Sof.

as evidencing the April volume of the set of
Office Menaia, in its relatively completed form from the time of the "late"
Presláv
(the rule of the Bulgarian Tsar Peter,
927-969).
The fourth chapter "Original Old Bulgarian Works of the Disciples of
SS
Cyril and Methodius in the Menaion" is dedicated to two hymnograph¬
ic works: an anonymous Office for Sts. Vitus,
Modestus,
and Crescentia
and the Office for St. Apollinaris, Bishop of Ravenna by St. Clement of
Ohrid.
The Chapter discusses the problems of their origin from the per¬
spective of their compositional, stylistic, and linguistic characteristics. A
cautions suggestion is made that the Office for Sts. Vitus,
Modestus,
and
Crescentia is the joint work of St.
Naum
of
Ohrid
and St. Clement of
Ohrid.
After a thorough analysis of five out of the six known copies (two Old Rus¬
sian, two Serbian and one West Bulgarian), a reconstruction is made of the
original composition and the complete text is edited. The chosen basis of
the edited text is the earliest extant copy

in the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg, dating of the 12th
century. The edition of the text was supplemented with hymns culled from
South Slavonic Menaia that are absent in the East Slavonic literature. The
Office for St. Apollinaris, Bishop of Ravenna is studied by the analysis of
the four currently known copies of it (two Old Russian, one Serbian, and
one Bulgarian). The data from the text-transmission reveals its relatively
stable tradition. Special attention is paid to the metric structure of the
canon, which is constructed in the classical isosyllabic iambic verse with
12
syllables. The text of the office is edited as the canon is given in verses,
based on the isosyllabic versification. |
