Summary
On the centenary of the first performance of T Rite of Spring - a ballet with Igor Stravinsky’s music and Vaclav Nijinsky’s choreography -in May 2013 academics from the Faculty of Music Theory of the Grazyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Lodz and the Institute of Contemporary Culture of the Lodz University, together with the Warsaw Institute of Music and Dance, as well as invited guest speakers from other higher education institutions, joined in a common discussion on the impact of this work on art and culture of the last century. The participants of the project represented various disciplines and research methodologies, which enabled them to look at the iconic Rite of Spring from different scientific and time perspectives, as well as to notice a multi-dimensional meaning of the piece and a possibility of understanding it in changing cultural-aesthetic contexts.
The book „The Rite of Spring. Two perspectives” comprises texts that are based on the reflections presented during a joint meeting and debate. The layout is subordinated to two key perspectives. In the first part -ZEITPUNKT 1913 - there are articles of musicological nature, whose authors - departing from the discussion on musical aspects of The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky - take up studies on musical compositions created at the same time (thus, drawing up a particular musical landscape of the year 1913) and attempt a ‘spot’ reconstruction of that interesting moment in the history of music. The other part of the book - WIOSNA MODERNIZMU EUROPEJSKIEGO - consists of the texts covering various aspects of culture

Summary
studies: theatre arts, history of art, film studies, aesthetics and philosophy, in which the ballet by Stravinsky/ Nijinsky is treated as a source of inspiration for modernist artists, in a broad meaning of the word ‘modernism’ covering our century.
Groundbreaking importance of Stravinsky’s work affected a way of thinking assumed in the book and determined that a focal point of the first part should be this particular moment in the history of music. Musicologists and music theorists went over the year 1913 with a fine toothcomb. They took a closer look at composers’ artistic output and music aesthetics of that time. As it turned out, the moment was crucial and fraught with irreversible consequences and the accompanying multitude of different artistic proposals in music allowed to take comparative, confrontational and evaluative perspectives. The book opens with a text by Alicja Jarz^bska presenting a role and place of The Rite of Spring in a contemporary culture (broadly-speaking), especially in the fields of music aesthetics and modern reception of music. Outlined issues become a point of reference for other phenomena and aesthetic systems discussed in the book, providing a key perspective for insight into analysis and interpretation of factual information from the history of music. Hence, Marcin Trz^siok’s study of The Three Japanese Lyrics by Stravinsky, composed almost at the same time, highlights a complex nature of artistic creation. Surprising emotional self-restraint and euphonic sophistication of that cycle seem to be more akin to an aesthetically distant poetics of the Viennese School than to an outburst of energy in The Rite of Spring; and reading Trz^siok’s text with reference to the theses presented by Ewa Kowalska-Zajqc in her article on Anton Webern’s FünfStücke op. 10 encourages to transgress established habitual thinking about time and geographical criteria of the 20th-century music.
However, 1913 is also the time when late-Romantic and Expressionist traditions still seemed to be alive and kicking. What a dramatic role The Rite of Spring must have played in revealing backwardness and imitative nature of other works created with full conviction by important composers of the time! In that context, Josephslegende - a ballet by Richard Strauss written simultaneously with Stravinsky’s composition and also dedicated to Serge Diaghilevs Russian Ballets, was immediately downgraded to the category of epigone aesthetics; and that is what Ryszard Daniel Golianek discusses

in his text. Malgorzata Janicka-Slysz, on the other hand, shows how Karol Szymanowski’s fascinations with German Expressionism led to a failure of his Hagith opera. Just like artistic experiments of Albert Roussel, in which the composer balanced between Symbolist depth and Neoclassic simplification, compared with inventiveness of Rite of Spring appear to be a sort of aesthetic escapism, or even more - a manifestation of helplessness in the face of inevitability of passing time. In the characteristics of Le Festin de l’araignée ballet, a work full of sophisticated allegories, Jolanta Szulakowska-Kulawik reveals how impermanent all the canons and patterns of contemporary art are. Comparing this work with the Jeux ballet by Claude Debussy, which is discussed in the text by Kamila Stçpien-Kutera, seems to be by all means instructive. It turns out that at the same time and in the same Parisian circle, works of utterly different artistic character were perceived as relevant and original, while the two compositions in question - by Debussy and Roussel - represent the same ballet genre, and so does The Rite of Spring, by the way. Still, such a variety might not have bothered musical Parisians then as the year 1913 coincided with their fascination for a new tango culture, which suddenly arrived from overseas and at the time burst out into an amazing tango-mania by the Seine. That phenomenon, which must not be overlooked, is thoroughly discussed by Marta Szoka in her essay closing the first part of the book.
Texts presented in the second part of the publication treat The Rite of Spring, as well as its artistic transformations and references to it, as a message to the present time. This set of culture studies opens with an article by Anna Kuligowska-Korzeniewska, whose introductory reflections upon Stravinsky’s / Nijinsky’s work revolve around a big pagan ritual show’. Referring mainly to chronicles and historic studies, she questions credibility of human offering in pre-Slavic rituals and attributes its manifestation in The Rite of Spring to artistic imagination. Nevertheless, the fact that Offering / The Chosen One is an artistic creation does not lessen the power of influence of this dramatized ritual, which is proved by the author through analyzing the manner of presenting the offering in selected realizations of The Rite of Spring.
A different view is put forward by Joanna Szymajda, who shows a performance by The Polish National Ballet from 2011 from a culture studies perspective and concentrates on the determinants of mythic aspects of

Summary
The Rite of Spring depicted in choreographies by Nijinsky, Bejart and Gat, as well as in Stravinsky’s score itself. Combining the three realizations in one Warsaw performance is just like creating a bridge over the past century. Reconstruction of the original version carried out by Millicent Hodson (choreography) and Kenneth Archer (costumes, stage design) can be treated only as an attempt at approaching the legendary original, whereas in Bejart’s choreography narration transgresses the dimension of a folklore ritual, thus creating a universal mythology of love as a source of divine creation. The third of the realizations in question - by Emanuel Gat - is perceived by Joanna Szymajda as a ‘glocalization’ product. Although the choreographer does not change a deep structure of the ritual, in which a fear of a woman being the offering is predominant from the very beginning, the ritual itself is performed in a salsa rhythm, which detracts pathos and erotic charge characteristic of both earlier versions of The Rite of Spring.
The realization of Pina Bausch is presented yet in another context and treated in a text by Malgorzata Leyko as transformation of the historic memory into the collective memory. is a work which
depicts particularly vividly the artistic personality of its author. The basic element defining all aspects of Bausch s performance is soil which covers the stage floor - real and sensual presence of it makes the ritual of „the earth coming to life, symbolizing fertility, revival, abundance, cyclical nature of existence and therefore - death, absorption of life powers” happen on stage. Interpreted in an eco-aesthetic context, the choreography of Fruhlingsopfer - written with Bausch’s own body - becomes an important group bond, even after its founder’s death.
Fate of Stravinsky’s score remains unaffected by its stage life, as popularity of it results from its melodic power and formal openness. That is why, authors of following texts focus on the problems of musical aspects of The Rite of Spring. Jacek Szerszenowicz, while reconstructing a theoretical model of Carl Gustav Jung who indicates two modes of artistic creation -visionary and psychological one, attempts to find in Stravinsky’s biography and works some premises enabling him to depict the process of writing The Rite of Spring as a visionary mode. Hence, the author determines four areas of indicators constituting visionary art (biographical premises, cultural circumstances, contents of the work, and artistic means applied) and

shows precisely how this particular work of art can be described in terms of Jung’s concept.
In turn, the point of a text by Tomasz Majewski, discussing the Hollywood experience of Igor Stravinsky, is that there is something more at issue than just merely revealing a downgrading act of „stripping of Spring of its avant-garde aura” and turning it into an episode in Disney’s Fantasia. Showing an ambiguous attitude of the Russian composer to the relation between artistic music and film medium, as well as a process of converting The Rite of Spring score into a version differing from the ballet one of 1913, Majewski treats American experiences of Stravinsky as exemplification of mutual relations between artistic European modernism and mass culture arising in the United States. By contrast, a video installation by Katarzyna Kozyra, titled The Rite of Spring and discussed by Dariusz Lesnikowski, confirms the power of influence of the first ballet version also when applying media other than direct live dance performance or concert hall presentation of music. Kozyra’s installation, made up of juxtaposed, multiplied pictures displayed on the screens of a few projectors where numerous repetitions of a few-minute culminating dance scene of the Offered One appear, enhances the sensation of a neurotic, rabid fight for life. The impact of that scene lies behind the fact that the main characters here are old naked people, with their natural, age- and physical condition-related awkwardness.
Although the article by Bogdan Banasiak titled Georges Bataille -human as an excess of energy (which closes the book) does not refer directly to the legendary work by Stravinsky/ Nijinsky, it still turns to the concept constituting The Rite of Spring - the one of a human being suspended between sacrum and profanum. Perceiving a man from Bataille’s perspective - as an excess of energy, the author shows that „this energy surfeit constitutes a scale of human dynamics, makes a man as much create and build while bothering about survival, as much destroy their works and squander their own lives”.
The reflections presented in the second, culture studies-oriented part of the book show that since the premiere performance of The Rite of Spring we have been deep in a modern trend of ‘long-term’ works that still have an impact on our aesthetic reception of the world. The process in question seems to be yet in progress.
