An Early Iron Age settlement in the east
of the Lublin region (summary)
1.
Introduction
The city of
Hrubieszów
is situated in eastern Poland, in the western part of the Vol-
hyn Plateau, on the Huczwa River which is a left-bank tributary of the Bug River.
Hrubieszów
is the centre of an important mezzo-region called the
Hrubieszów
Basin
which is famous for a flourishing Goth settlement during the 2nd-5th centuries AD
(Kokowski
1999).
These are loess areas, covered with fertile chernozem soils.
The excavations on site
104
preceded the construction of the
Hrubieszów
bypass
(fig.
1:3)
and covered an area of
3146
m2. They brought the discovery of the rema¬
ins of a single-culture settlement, most likely two-phase, dated to the very end of
the Older Pre-Roman Period, which can be attributed to the Pomeranian culture.
The excavations yielded
19
archaeological features and
326
portable artefacts. The
north-eastern and south-western boundaries of the site have probably been identi¬
fied (fig.
3).
2.
Analysis of archaeological material
In the southern part of the site, a clay-pit was found, designated as feature
1
(fig.
3, 5-7;
plate I—IV). Its stratigraphy revealed a distinct division into two parts: pits-
-hollows in the bottom part (features
1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5),
filled with alternate
layers of humus and loess soil, and a homogenous layer of humus (feature
1)
in the
ceiling part. The origin of the 'pits-hollows' should be sought in chaotic exploration
of clay, which led to deeper excavation in places where material of the best quality
was found. The hollows were subsequently filled in with pure loess material during
the further exploration of the clay-pit. The ceiling layer (feature
1)
results from the
natural accumulation of diluvial sediments. The above interpretation is supported
by the analysis of pottery fragmentation in both parts of the clay-pit (fig.
8).
The se¬
lective exploitation suggests that clay was taken for pottery making rather than for
construction. Sites of clay exploitation are rarely discovered in Bronze and Early Iron
Age settlements in Poland, because they are usually situated outside the densely set¬
tled area (e.g.
Głogowski
et al.
2004, 240-241, 332,
fig.
2:4,5).
The middle and northern parts of the site yielded the remains of
3
stoves (features
11, 16,17 -
fig.
3).
These were dug-in features, oval in plan
(2.8*2.2
m) and hollow-
-shaped or rectangular in cross-section, and their depths varied from
0.4
to
0.7
m
(plate
VIII:1; IX:1; XI:1).
Originally, the stoves were dug into the ground and were
provided with over-ground canopies covered with clay; they most likely had no gra¬
tes. We can include them to the category of single-chamber pit-stoves. A side apertu¬
re was only recorded in feature
17
(fig.
10:1).
To reconstruct the appearance of the
over-ground parts of the stoves, the morphology of daub fragments from the layers
with dome remains was analysed. None of the fragments were arch-shaped in pro¬
file and so this would seem to rule out hemispherical domes. However, numerous
74
fragments
bearing the imprints of flat, or nearly flat, planks of split wood were re¬
corded (table
8),
which suggests that the over-ground parts were formed like two- or
four-sloped roofs rather than domes (see
Michalskí
1983,173,
fig.
59).
Three poten¬
tial functions of these stoves seem worth considering, namely
(1)
pottery firing;
(2)
lime production; or
(3)
bread baking. The vicinity of a clay-pit seems to argue for the
first possibility.
Most of the
12
pits discovered on the site were grouped into two clusters in the
south-western part of the explored area, between the clay-pit (feature
1]
and stoves
16
and
17
(fig.
3).
Their sizes varied from
0.25
m2 (feature
15 -
plate VHI:2) to
3.5
m2
(feature
24 -
plate XIII-.l), and they were usually relatively shallow. Some of them co¬
uld have been storage pits (especially those pits of trapezium-shaped or rectangular
cross-section), while others could have had other functions, for example connected
with raw material processing or food preparation. There also were
3
features recor¬
ded which could have been the remains of posts or poles (plate
¥11:2,3,5).
Planigraphy offers some clues which allow us to assume that the investigated fe¬
atures represent at least two phases of the settlement occupation. In the beginning,
there was a household in the southern part of the site (with stove
11
in a distance
of ca
45
m). Then, the dwelling part shifted to the west, and the initial area became
a small, somewhat isolated production zone where clay was extracted and vessels
were formed dried, and fired. Probably they were first fired in a stove similar to the
previous one (feature
16)
and then in a more advanced stove with a side channel
(feature
17).
The settlement produced
320
fragments of Pomeranian culture pottery, which
came from no more than
211
vessels (table
9).
The form was identified for
60
vessels
(28%).
There were pot-like vessels (smaller pots and large so-called cloches)
(38%),
flat plates
(10%),
cups/jugs
(11.6%),
vases
(5%),
scoops and bowls
(27%
in total).
Pots and cloches usually had thickened rims decorated with characteristic 'braiding'
(fig.
19:2,4,5; 20:2; 21:2).
This trait is believed to be a 'cultural marker'
(Szamałek
2002,181)
and often occurs on pottery from settlements and cemeteries (especially
in the Older Pre-Roman Period) in various parts of the area occupied by the Pomera¬
nian culture, in graves, pot-like vessels played the role of urns and cloches that were
used to cover them. In settlements, they were no doubt used to store (cloches) and
cook (pots) food.
Flat spherical plates also belong to kitchenware. Most of them had 'braided' rims,
as in pots. Apparently flat plates were used in various ways including for baking flat-
bread or as pot lids
(Czopek
2007,189-190).
Among the forms with a carrying handle typical in the Pomeranian culture, such as
jugs and cups, one can distinguish two stylistic-typological lines. The first comprises
vessels with brick-red or brown surfaces, similar to pots (fig.
19:8,10;
plate Vl:a-b).
The second line is represented by more
'elegant'
forms, with black surfaces (fig.
19:3;
plate VII.-c; XHI.e; XIV:a,b). Bowls are mainly represented by hemispherical forms, with
more or less inverted rims (plate VII:a; X:e; XIV:f). There were also two scoops in the
analysed material, representing simple conical forms (fig. 21:3-3a; plate VI:e, XIV:d).
The repertoire of decoration techniques and motifs recorded on the vessels found
at
Hrubieszów
is relatively rich for a late Pomeranian culture assemblage (compare
ІІ75
Czopek
1992а,
45-48).
Nearly
13%
of ceramic units were decorated, and this share
rises to as much as
38%
for the specimens whose form was identified. In seve¬
ral cases the bands of comb ornament covered the entire vessel body (fig.
19:2,7;
20:1,2;
plate X-.e, XHI:f, XIV:i). Vessels decorated with incised comb ornamentation
are not particularly common in Pomeranian culture inventories, although the¬
ir distribution covers nearly the entire range of this culture. Comb decoration is
also known from the Zarubintsy (e.g.
Кухаренко
1961,
plate
12:7, 36:14,15,18),
the )astorf (mainly in phases Jastorf and Ripdorf
-
Domański
1975,
plate XXIV:r,
XXVI:h,w; Seyer
1982,
plate
13:2-3, 23:27, 24:12, 37:11; Müller 1985,
plate
17:26,
21:14,24, 57:9-10, 108:6)
and of course the
La Tene
cultures (e.g. Kappel
1969;
Poleska
2006, 72-75,
fig.
12).
To investigate the technological diversity of pottery, particular technological traits
were identified (table
9)
and the correspondence analysis was applied (fig.
22:1).
Two clusters are clearly distinguishable on the diagram, which roughly correspond
with 'kitchenware' and 'tableware'. This intuitive distinction turned out to overlap
quite well with the groups established by means of statistical analysis (fig.
22:1-2).
The important conclusion is that no group can be distinguished based on a single
parameter, such as temper type or surface type, which sometimes are used to identify
technological groups in Bronze- and Early Iron Age pottery (e.g. Marchelak, Tyszler
2003,111-115;
Pawlak, Pawlak
2008, 192).
Each of the groups is linked with parti¬
cular vessel types, which means that technological differences are probably function-
-related. Kitchenware correlates with pots, plates and bowls. They are distinguished
by thick walls (from
8
to
16
mm), coarse or coarsened surfaces (of several different
types) and medium or dense temper in clay. The ceramic receipts predominant in
this group contained medium-size and coarse-grained tempers (grains larger than
2
mm; fig.
22:1; 24).
Tableware links with jugs/cups, scoops and vases, which are ves¬
sels with walls
4
to
8
mm thick and smooth surfaces. This group is strongly associa¬
ted with fine-grained tempers (grains smaller than
2
mm), usually added in smaller
quantity. Thus, technological-functional groups differ in temper granulation rather
than temper type (Kneisel
et ai
2010, 133,
fig.
11).
Crushed stone, sand, chamotte,
and their combinations, are generally evenly represented in both groups (fig.
24).
This could speak in favour of the view, based on ethno-archaeological studies, that
the selection of temper was determined first of all by non-technological factors (raw
material accessibility, tradition, factors of a magical nature
-
Gibson, Woods
1997,
37;
Woodward
2008, 86).
3.
Subsistence basis
The archaeobotanical and
-
in particular
-
archaeozoological material collected on
the site is very modest and far from sufficient for attempting the reconstruction of
subsistence basis of the population inhabiting the settlement. What was achieved
was only the confirmation that barley, hulled wheat and bread wheat were cultivated
(see chapter
7),
which agrees with the data available in the literature for cereal culti¬
vation in the Pomeranian culture (Klichowska
1962).
Cattle breeding should also be
regarded as probable. However, it seems unlikely that specialised pottery was a basic
76
ii
occupation,
despite the fact that some traces of large-scale, advanced pottery making
were recorded (clay-pit, stoves).
4.
Chronology of the settlement
The chronology of the
Hrubieszów
settlement is based on the analysis of forms and
decoration of ceramic vessels. The predominance of pot-like vessels, gentle vessel
profiles, and lack of incised decoration (even on tableware) together with the domi¬
nation of plastic ornaments indicate that the analysed materials should be dated to
the period after 'the horizon of the Kowalowice/Kaulwitz fibulae' (i.e. after
Ha D3
-
LT A/Bl). These materials can be linked with the developed stage of the Older Pre-
-Roman period and synchronised with phase IV of the Pomeranian culture according
to S.
Czopek
(1992a). Settlements at
Wielka Nieszawka
(Kola
1969),
Brześć Kujawski
(Jażdżewski
1939,
plate VI-VII), Szeligi (Chomentowska
1975)
and
Podłęże (Dzię-
gielewski
et al.
2011)
are dated the same period. However, the analysed assemblage
has most in common with the sites from the
Chełm
region and the
Hrubieszów
Basin,
such as the settlements at Wytyczno (pit
2 -
Mazurek
1996a, plate VI-VII, VIII.-1-4;
2001,
fig.
3),
Czerniczyn, site
1/81
(Czopek
1991b, fig. 9:h-m, 10:j-n), Wronowice-
-Paprzyca (Czopek
1991b, fig. 10:a-i), and the cemetery at Czerniczyn, site
20
(Czo¬
pek
1991b, fig.
3-7,
б-.а
-d).
These sites were attributed to the older phase of the so-
-called Czerniczyn group, a syncretic Pomeranian-Jastorf cultural unit identified in
the 1980's
(Czopek
1991a; 1991b; 1992a,
122-131).
Thus, stylistic arguments allow us to date the
Hrubieszów
settlement to the period
from the late phase LT A till the early LT B2, i.e. from the end of the 5th century until
the beginning of the 3rd century
ВС. То
verify this conclusion, a series of radiocarbon
and
thermoluminescence
determinations were made which showed that materials
from the settlement (bones, daub and wood) most likely (with the
95%
probability)
come from the period between
390
and
1
ВС
(see Table
1 -
the determination deno¬
ted as Lub-5337 was rejected). The 68%-probability ranges of the three dates taken
into account only overlap for the period between
210
and
100
ВС
(fig.
29).
The two hypothetical phases of the
Hrubieszów
settlement which were distingu¬
ished solely on the basis of the functional and planigraphical analysis, undoubtedly
fall within the above presented chronological frameworks, i.e. between
390
and
200
(100?)
ВС.
In fact, the settlement could have functioned for only several
-
up to
20
years within the above timespan, probably with no major gaps.
5.
Settlement context
The settlement on site
104
at
Hrubieszów
was undoubtedly a component of a lar¬
ger settlement cluster of the Pomeranian culture in the north-eastern part of the
Hrubieszów
Basin. Some of the settlements and cemeteries within the localities of
Czerniczyn and
Masłomęcz
most likely existed in the same period
(Czopek
1991a).
The cemetery on site
31
at
Gródek nad Bugiem
at least partially overlaps with the
Hrubieszów
settlement (Panasiewicz
1998).
In a slightly broader perspective, among
the analogically dated sites one can mention the settlement at Litovezh, raj. Ivanichi
77
(Ukraine)
(Czopek
1992a, 169,
plate
XXIV).
Some of the graves can be linked with the
same period, especially those dated by the Duxer type fibulae, from the cemeteries
at Golovno (Ukraine) and Trostyanitsa, raj. Kamenets (Belarus)
(Кухаренко
1961;
Никитина
1965;
Woźniak
2010, 94).
6.
Materials of a different chronology
The site yielded two artefacts made of Volhynian Cretaceous flint. The first one is
a cortex flake with traces of splintering (fig.
30:1),
partially patinized. The second
is a patinized crested blade (second series), broken at both ends (fig.
30:2).
They
should probably be linked with the Older Stone Age (Upper-Final Palaeolithic). Non-
-Pomeranian culture pottery is represented by only
4
tiny shards of grey wheel-made
pottery from the very end of the Late Middle Ages or the beginnings of the modern
period
(15Љ/16Љ-17Ш
century).
7.
The analysis of botanical material
Krystyna Wasylikowa, Katarzyna Cywa
Botanical material collected at the Pomeranian culture site
104
at
Hrubieszów
con¬
tained charcoal as well as fruits and seeds, both preserved in charred form and as
imprints. Most of the charcoal came from oak [Quercus sp.), and only one sample
produced a few fragments of Scots pine [Pinus silversths). It can be assumed that
the inhabitants of the settlement mainly used oak wood which is both an excellent
material for construction and fuel. The good state of preservation of the oak char¬
coal from feature
18
suggests that these fragments may come from constructional
timber. The clay daub, discovered in six archaeological features, revealed very few
imprints of barley [Hordeum
vulgare],
emmer
or einkorn wheat {Triticum dicoccon
or T. monococcum), undetermined wheat [Triticum sp.) or undetermined cereals (Ce-
realia indet). One feature produced charred
caryopses
of the hulled form of barley
and bread wheat {Triticum aestivum]. Wild plants are represented by one imprint of
a mericarp of false cleavers
[Galium spurium],
one charred caryopsis of
brome
[Bro¬
mus
sp.) and a charred grain resembling clover (Trifoliae). The very low number of
imprints suggests that botanical material was not intentionally added to the clay. The
composition of cereal species was similar in all the features, with the dominance of
barley over various wheat types.
8.
The results of thermoluminescence dating of clay daub
larosław Kusiak
The samples collected from two stoves discovered on site
104
at
Hrubieszów
were
dated using the thermoluminescence method. The samples were dated twice, using
two sets of instruments and two methods for determining the archaeological dose.
The first results were obtained by means of the multiple aliquot additive dose pro¬
tocol (MAAD). The measurements were carried out using the one-position TL RA'94
reader. The repeated dating used the single aliquot regenerative-dose method
(SAR),
78
and the measurements were performed using the TL/OSL Ris0 DA-20 automatic me¬
asurement system. The obtained results were, respectively,
2334
±
178
and

one. The difference in the results obtained for the same sample most likely stems
from the application of different instruments and procedures for determining the ar¬
chaeological dose. The application of the automatic reader TL/OSL Ris0 DA-20 made
it possible to use
SAR
procedure, which is characterised by a considerably smaller
measurement error than the MAAD method.

Conclusions
Apparently, one could attribute the analysed materials to the so-called 'older phase
of the Czerniczyn group'. However, according to the current state of research, there
is a chronological gap between this phase and the horizon distinguished by the ap¬
pearance of certain Jastorf elements. This is an important argument for abandoning
the idea of the Czerniczyn group as a chronologically and territorially coherent phe¬
nomenon
(Dąbrowska
2001, 27;
Grygiel
2004, 39-50).
The materials attributed thus
far to the 'older phase' should rather be regarded as representing the final (IV) phase
of the Pomeranian culture as understood by S.
Czopek
(1992a). The dissimilarity of
the
Hrubieszów
Basin materials from the entire south-eastern zone of the Pomera¬
nian culture, upon which Czopek's hypothesis was predicated concerning the 'later-
-than-Pomeranian' chronology of these materials, seems less important today (see
for example the materials from settlements at
Wielka Nieszawka,
Roszowicki Las or
Podłęże
-
Kola
1969;
Bednarek
1992;
Dzięgielewski etal.
2011).
As a matter of fact,
S.
Czopek
himself admitted the possibility that the phenomena described as the 'ol¬
der phase of the Czerniczyn group' had a broader range
(1995, 278).
An important result of the excavations at
Hrubieszów
is the uncovering of a settle¬
ment with its diversified set of features, some of which were connected with manu¬
facture, most likely that of pottery. This offers an insight into still poorly investigated
issues such as the spatial organisation of settlements and the economic activity of
their inhabitants. To shed more light on these issues it is crucial in view of the still
vivid controversies about the economic strategies of the 'Pomeranian' societies who
inhabited most of what is now Poland after the collapse of the stable settlement and
social structures of the
Lusatian
culture farmers (e.g.
Ostoja-Zagórski
1995;
Czopek
2005;
Dzięgielewski
2010c).
