ABSTRACT
From
2007
to
2009,
the all-Slovenian project presenting conditions
in archival repository units in the national, all

regional,

public
and
3
church archives in Slovenia was carried out. Assessments
were given according to a unified methodology on the basis often
agents of deterioration. It was discovered that all archival reposi¬
tories are filled to capacity and that there is still a lot of archives
at creators. All repositories, except three, are placed in buildings
and premises, which were built for entirely different purposes and
all are lacking suitable climate conditions. The present project is
confirming the initial hypothesis that archival repositories are the
basis of every archival institution and that in the field of reposi¬
tories and preservation there is still a lot of work to be done on
all levels inside individual archives, Slovene archival practice and
also on the level of the ministry or the state. Effective preservation
can mostly be achieved by better planning; therefore all parties
involved must be qualified, from investors to executants but mostly
archivists themselves.

INTRODUCTION
The idea of the project about the conditions in archival reposito¬
ries arose at a non-formal meeting while celebrating the

an¬
niversary of the Regional Archives in
Koper.
Directors, present at
the event, supported the suggested idea to discuss the burning and
often overlooked subject about the problems in Slovene archival
repositories as a central topic at the 23rd archival conference in
Velenje in
2007.
The discussion gave good results, the Archives of
the Republic of Slovenia, all regional, main church and three larger
public archives joined in to research the conditions in archival re¬
positories. Inventorying of repositories conditions was done based
on a unified methodology, created, tested and adapted to the field
of movable cultural heritage especially for archives, libraries and
museums by Stefan
Michalskí
and Robert Waller. Their method
was presented and tested at ICCROM1 international seminars on
condition assessment and priorities determination in archives, mu¬
seums and libraries.
The project started in
2007
and was finished in
2009.
In the first
phase, the risk assessment methodology was tested; almost half of
the archival repositories were inventoried and assessed. The results
were presented at the conference in Velenje. The second part of the
project included the rest of the assessments in all public archives,
some of them were presented- at the international conference Tech¬
nical and field related problems of traditional and electronic ar¬
chiving in Radenci in
2008.
At the expanded meeting of directors
of Slovene public archives on October 27th,
2008
the participants
ascertained that the problem of Slovene archival repositories is be¬
coming more and more urgent. A decision was reached that this
problem must be introduced to the minister and her close co-work¬
ers as soon as possible. It was suggested that all inventories of
repositories conditions should be finished and an analysis of the
actual state prepared. We could therefore determine the priorities
and set a short and a long-term plan for solving this exception¬
ally important and more and more burning problem of archival
repositories in Slovenia. The resolutions of the above mentioned
meeting and the suggestion of
Matevž Kosir,
the director of the
Archives of the Republic of Slovenia, to compile a publication
devoted to the conditions in archival repositories in
2009,
led to
the forming of a work group which included representatives of all
regional, church and state archives. By April
2009,
in the third,
final phase of the project, surveys describing the actual conditions
in repositories were collected. By the end of June
2009,
these were
checked and prepared for the present publication, which is divided
in two parts.
The first part includes articles, which could be helpful for assuring
suitable long-term storage of archives:

Analysis of archival repositories condition
•
Climate conditions in archival repositories
•
Fire safety in archival repositories
•
Architecture of archives: the influence of architectural
design on the climate in archival repositories
•
Support points to consider before making
an adaptation or building new archival premises
In the introduction to the second part, the used methodology is
presented. This is followed by the most extensive part of the pub¬
lication, where the collected data based on surveys of all examined
archival repository units are presented in separate groups:

The Archives of the Republic of Slovenia
•
Regional archives
•
Three larger church archives
•
Central church archives.
METHODOLOGY
For the analysis of risk assessment and the state in archival reposi¬
tories we chose a method2, which was, according to the principles
of risk assessment3, prepared, tested and adapted to the field of

The principles of state determination and models for risk assessment
are similar for all kinds of human activities, as in the field of traffic,
climate changes or danger to cultural heritage. The method used was
prepared according to these basic principles.
