SUMMARY
Slovak historiography concentrated by processing the questions of mining in
Central Slovak region mainly on copper business history in
Banská
Bystrica.
Spania Dolina
which was the raw material base of this unique phenomenon in
Ugrian economy was still remaining at the edge of interest.
Banská
Bystrica owes its attribute and probably its existence as well not only
the mineral sources in its area, but the settlements near mines and smelters where
the miners lived and worked as well.
Unlike about
Banská
Bystrica we know about the history of surrounding mining
and metallurgical settlements only a little, because they were a part of private
mining and metallurgical companies until the half of 16th century. The existence
and period of their founding is unknown and even
Spania Dolina
is not an
exception.
We must parallely concentrate on history of
Banská
Bystrica as well as on the
settlements
Spania Dolina
because it was founded in its area. When the Germans
founded the town, the mineral sources of this area had been already partly
detected. German guests knew the real quantity of the mineral sources compared
to its later state only partially, but this knowledge was enough to include the
minefield with copper-silver ore occurrence into the area of the new town. The
area of current
Staré Hory
-
part Haliar evoked the main interest. Even the silver
ore was mined here. It was only later, probably in the second half of 14th century,
the miners from
Staré Hory
dug through
Richtárová
over to the area of
Piesky
and
Spania Dolina.
Significant boom of the settlement is recorded only after the
Thurzo-Fugger company commenced its activities in the area. It built alrge minig
complex in this area, which created space for the miners to settle down
permanently.
Following the privileged rights of
Banská Bystrica,
which also included
demarcation the area of a later settlements
Spania Dolina,
were its inhabitants
legally, administratively and churchly subordinated to municipal body of
Banská
Bystrica. This unlimited subordination remained until the beginning of the 16th
century, when first the conflicts in questions of power over the mining working
class between Thurzo-Fugger business company and the town of
Banská

Bystrica,
occured. We assume similar development based at the sources related
to parochial church of
Banská
Bystrica and Corpus
Christi
brotherhood (originally
Church and later also social organization of miners).
We should remark that the church in
Spania Dolina
is claimed, in the text from
18th century situated above the portal, to be built in
1254.
However, it is certain
that the church was not built until the end of 16th century. There could be a
chapel, built sometimes at the end of 15th century, which was later rebuilt into a
church.
At the beginning of the 16th century we already assume a relatively large
settlements of a permanent and not only temporal working population. In
1526
was
the name
Spania Dolina
detected in the sources for the first time, even thought it
was only mentioned as a copper company inventory and not as a settlement.
In
1526
the settlements churchly organization changed as well. Reformation
ideas brought to
Banská
Bystrica already in previous years had an enormous
influence on mining working class as well. One of the outcomes of a spreading
movement was also a partial separation of miners in
spania Dolina
from parish of
Banská
Bystrica when a Protestant preacher started his activity in the chapel in
Spania Dolina.
In
1546
the Fuggers definitely left the business in the area of
Banská
Bystrica
which was taken over by an unprepared royal state property. Even the mining,
metallurgical and coal producing settlements in this territory together with the
company began to be administrated by the Lower Austrian Chamber. As a head of
the company as well as the top of mining settlements hierarchy was assigned an
administrator who was subordinated to a chamber earl in Banska
Štiavnica.
All the important changes within the administration and legal field of Central
Slovak mining towns and its mining settlements happened after the proclamation
of a unified mining order, the Maximilian Mining Act in
1573.
The change in company management influenced also the religious life in mining
settlements. Chamber representatives, being royal employees, were unlike the
inhabitants of the settlements mainly Catholics, which led to later stage of anti-
Protestant moods. Significant anti-Protestant environment was introduced in the
60 s of the 16th century. Despite the unfavorable atmosphere was the chapel of
Spania Dolina
rebuilt into a church under the Protestant preacher supervision in
1593.

The turbulent
17th century in general influenced the copper company situation in
Banská
Bystrica as well, what caused the suffering of the
employées.
The fife in
Spania Dolina
became qualitatively worse. The miners got poor, ill and
consequently dead. Most of them were leaving
Spania Dolina
due to the
impossibility of providing food for themselves and their families. Reasons were of
all-society and in-plant character.
Religious history of
Spania Dolina
in 17th century was nothing but peaceful. It
was mainly affected by re-Catholic ambitions of the chamber on one hand, i.e.
handicapping of Protestant employees, Jesuits influence, church withdrawal from
Protestants and rebellious pro-reformation reports and repeated church withdrawal
from Catholics on the other. Due to the political climate it was finally managed to
recatholize
Spania Dolina.
A purely Protestant
Spania Dolina
became, with the
help of Jesuits, Catholic.
