| adam_text | The economic situation in Sub-Saharan Africa has recently undergone a process
of change. After a long period of stagnation during the
1
980s and
1
990s, GDP
per capita has shown significant growth in the early part of the 21st century.
However, the sustainability of this growth trend remains of great concern.
The current growth, underpinned by the rise of commodity prices, will not be
sustained unless there are persistent price increases, which arguably induces
the resource curse problem from which many African countries have suffered.
Therefore, to ensure steady growth, diversification of economic structure is a
central issue, and growth in productivity is key to the development of the
non-resource sector.
This book aims to fill the gap in micro evidence on possible structural change of
African producers in an era of economic growth. In case studies based on
African examples, the authors carefully demonstrate firms and farmers
responses to recent economic trends such as growth in demand, the emergence
of foreign direct investment and improvement in infrastructure.
The case studies cover four industries in five countries that have experienced
significant external changes: namely, export-oriented horticulture in Ghana
and Kenya, construction in Burkina
Faso,
apparel manufacturing in Madagascar,
and cash-crop farming in Uganda. All chapters are based on field work conducted
by the contributors, and studies on Ghana, Burkina
Faso,
Madagascar and
Uganda use original producer-level data.
