STRANGER HERE, STRANGER THERE
Anthropological Research of Cultural
Identity of Guest Workers
Summarry
Haifa century after first guest workers went to countries
in the Western Europe to work there, it is a good occasion
to make a summary and
refocus
research on this complex
phenomenon, which had various and diverse consequences
both in the countries of origin and the immigration
countries, respectively. Anthropological approach to the
migrations underscores both the structure and the activity, it
examines macro-social outcomes, and also strategies and
decisions on micro-social level, as well as social ties and
relations within which individuals behave. Peculiarity of
the anthropological micro approach lies in its bottom-
up frame of reference, since it focuses on individual and
group experiences of migrants and their families.
Anthropologists aim to make their research empirical and
ethnographically contextualized. Anthropology is interested
in the questions of who, how and why emigrates, it aims to
understand through experience ethnography what it means
to be a migrant , the meanings ascribed to it by the
migrants themselves, how they interpret and constitute their
identity, how they make sense of the conditions of their
344
Summarry
existence, as well as social and cultural changes resulting
from convergence of different migrant environments and
cultural values.
In addition to ethnographic observation and participation,
an important part of the anthropological methodological
approach consists of in-depth semi-structural and non-
structural interviews which result in migrants
life stories.
Personal accounts provide an insight into the way
immigrants construct, invent, join and construct identities
from different sources, oftentimes coloring them with
profound ambivalences. Knowing the particularities of an
individual experience facilitates one to have better
understanding and make possible generalizations on the
level of group experiences, as evidenced by research in
ethnically and nationally different migrant stories, which
manifest high level of structural and narrative similarity and
uniformity, enabling researchers to establish that there is a
special oral genre of migrant stories
.
As part of migration research, temporary work migrants
in Europe, known as guest-workers or gastarbeiters, are a
special subject matter. Different aspects of these specific
migrants coming from poor countries from Southern and
Southeastern Europe to seek work in Western Europe,
which was built, constructed and developed at a fast pace in
the second half of the 20th century, is a relatively well-
studies phenomenon in international literature. Specific trait
of this particular group of migrants lies in the temporariness
of their work and sojourn, which was emphasized by all the
receiving countries in Europe, since they did not want to

345
turn guest-workers into permanently domiciled residents or
citizens. However, many of them stayed there, and their
number further increased as new ones arrived from their
homelands, but the key concept characteristic of these
migrants consists of the liminal temporariness
,
which
marks their life experiences in a very special way.
Serbian ethnology/anthropology principally dealt with
the problems of older migrations, particularly to overseas
countries (diaspora), as well as questions of status and
identity of the Serbian ethnic minority in the neighboring
countries. However, unskilled and low-skilled workers and
farmers going from these countries to seek temporary work
in Western Europe, that is,
gastarbeiter
phenomenon,
which is the central focus of interest in this book, was not
seriously or thoughtfully taken as a subject of research in
domestic ethnology/anthropology studies, for some pretty
unclear reasons.
Given that there is a want of ethnological and
anthropological papers on gastarbeiters in Serbia, the
project Neither Here, Nor There
-
Cultural Heritage and
the Identity of
Gastarbeiter
Population, which I was in
charge of, and which was financed by the Ministry of
Culture of the Republic of Serbia, aimed to determine the
conceptual content of the
gastarbeiter
cultural identity.
Research was also carried out as part of the project
Anthropological Research on Serbia
-
from Cultural

Heritage to Modern Society, financed by the Ministry of
Science and Education of the Republic of Serbia.
I take cultural identity to be a set of standpoints, beliefs
and values that people have of themselves in relation to the
group that they belong to, which is particularly noticeable
when people get in contact with different cultures. The aim
was to weigh various parameters of their identity
construction, and to see the processes, discourses and notions
related to this socio-cultural and economic group from
different perspectives. Still, we were aware that this field of
research is huge and complex, that it is impossible to
comprehend it in all relevant aspects in a limited time span
of this two-year project period
(2011-2012).
Consequently,
it was necessary to define which courses of action are the
ones that would lead to a comprehensive anthropological
interpretation of
gastarbeiter
population, as well as possible
subject matters and approaches that would tackle the
problem of research of socio-cultural particularities of this
group of people.
The upshot of the work on anthropological research of
gastarbeiters, within the project, is this book, as some
scientific articles also made by associates in this project

In the course of
2011,
research emphasis was made on
the problems of gastarbeiters self-identification. In the first

research year, field work was carried out in eastern and
southeastern Serbia, in villages surrounding Kucevo and
Knjaževac,
while in
2012,
it was, likewise, carried out in
eastern Serbia, in
Veliko Gradište, Braničevo
and
Smoljinac, when attention was paid to conversations with
gastarbeiters children and their compatriots. In October
2012,
we went to Vienna, where Serbian emigrant
community is the largest. We organized meetings with
representatives and associates of the Serbian Cultural-
Educational Society
Prosvjeta
9 Serbian Cultural Forum,
Austro-Serbian Society and the association
Wort-Farbe-
Klang
[Word-Color-Sound]
.
We wanted to make use of our
conversation to dwell a bit on the questions of what cultural
and educational contents they offer, and what activities they
undertake so as to preserve and represent the cultural and
ethnic identity and heritage of our people abroad, how
successful they are in this, and what obstacles and
difficulties they face with respect to this.
Sources for research were found, in the first place, in life
stories told by gastarbeiters that were provided through
semi-structured and unstructured interviews. We talked to
34
interviewees, of both sexes, having different ages and
educational backgrounds, after which we carried out quality
analysis of the material. I found a useful source of
information in the novel Twilight at the Viennese Doorway
(2010)
by Darko Markov, in which, in a touching way,
spicy vernacular language is used to depict a broad range of
feelings, thoughts, personality types and behaviors of our
gastarbeiters in Austria. I found another useful source of
348_________________________________

information in domestic movies dealing with gastarbeiters,
of which I would highlight, as particularly valuable, in
artistic sense, movies Don t Lean Out the Window
(1977)
directed by
Bogdan
Žižić
and There and Back
(1978)
directed by
Aleksandar Petković.
Various media sources,
such as the press, web-sites of various organizations,
institutions and associations, which are either engaged in
migrants or founded by them, as well as blogs and on-line
digital editions of magazines, are so plentiful that it is
impossible even to enumerate them all, let alone to search
through them in detail. I referred to them as well to the
extent that I found them necessary in order to illustrate a
given problem.
In the first chapter of the book, Frameworks for
Anthropological Research of Migrations and Cultural
Identity of
Gastarbeiters,
I delve into topics, approaches
and perspectives of anthropological research of
gastarbeiters in Serbia, with special reference to different
theories and methodological models applied in this book.
In the second chapter, ft
Gastarbeiter

:
General
Characteristics of Economic Migrations in Europe, with
special reference to Serbia, a survey is made of the
important postwar work migrations in Europe, and
characteristics of migrants status, position and practices,
while special emphasis is put on temporary work migrants.

In the third chapter, Being
Gastarbeiter:
Rhetoric of
Experience and Conceptualization of Cultural Identity, I
make use of the analytical model of cognitive cultural
scheme, developed in cognitive anthropology and
psychology, elaborating and expanding on the work done
by Claudia Strauss, Naomi Quinn, Hiroko Nishida, Marcus
Hazel and
Bojan Žikić;
together with the rhetoric theory of
Kenneth Burke, these theoretical and methodological
models provide the basis for an analysis of life stories as a
source for migrant research. Based on these theoretical
assumptions, cultural conceptualization of gastarbeiters
themselves was analyzed and examined through the
following cognitive schemes: self scheme, personality
scheme, and role scheme, procedural, strategic and
emotional scheme. At the end of this chapter, I expound on
the narrative structure of these accounts, which has a
fairytale-like paradigm of successful transformation of
socially and economically marginalized persons.
In the fourth chapter, Games of Prestige: A Contribution
to the Study of Economical Conduct of Gastarbeiters as a
Cultural Identity Factor, I set out an analysis of the most
salient indicators of economic prestige and symbolical
social status of gastarbeiters, which is expressed by them
through irrational spending and consumerist habits acquired
during the time they spent abroad. Their extravagant,
conspicuous, big houses, built by gastarbeiters in their
native villages, and glamorous wedding and baptism
ceremonies organized in their home country, are analyzed,
taken to be the most striking examples of their excessive,
350______________________________________
Summarry
boastful spending. This phenomenon is analyzed through
the lenses of the potlatch custom,
Thorstein Veblen s
concept of conspicuous consumption, the concept of kitsch
devised by Abraham Moles and
Ludwig Giesz,
and the
concept of commodiflcation of time formulated by Arjun
Appadurai. At the end of this chapter, I estimate whether
gastarbeiters were a, factor of modernization in Serbia, and
if so, in what way.
In the fifth chapter, Relativity of
Tempor
ariness:
Different Dimensions of Migrant Time, I applied the model
of analysis of migrant time which was proposed by Saulo
Cwerner, and the
semiotic
approach to temporality devised
by Eviatar Zerubavel. Migrations are usually studied as
movements in space, but seldom as movements in time too.
Different dimensions of subjective understanding of time,
and accordingly adjusted behavior of gastarbeiters, are also
a type of cognitive cultural schemes that I analyze within
the theoretical framework of anthropology of time.
hi the sixth chapter, Better Life, But Where? The Myth
of Success and the Myth of Return as Paradigm of the
Gastarbeiter
Cultural
Modely
I examine the grounds of the
construction of the myth of success
,
and draw comparisons
between stories of permanent and temporary migrants. The
myth of success is significantly determined by another
recurrent
gastarbeiter
subject, which is the myth of
homecoming. Either real or only imagined, homecoming
constitutes an essential determinant of life strategies of
¡mporary work migrants, even when this temporariness
tends over several decades, and homecoming is the final
Stranger Here, Stranger There
351
destination toward which the first generation of
gastarbeiters is headed to. I analyze different models of
homecomers, relying on the analyses done by Francesco
Cerase
and George Gmelch. Given that the final conclusion
drawn from the analysis is that most of the Serbian
gastarbeiters will not come back to live in Serbia, and a
certain number of them only once they retire, we come to
realize that all their efforts and money invested in big
houses and lands in their homeland, which are not without a
living soul in them, have been made absolutely relative.
Consequence of their work migrations is that entire villages
in the country have become demo graphically deserted.
Therefore, there is ground to ask in what sense did they
actually achieve success, and where is indeed their real
home to which they return?
In the seventh chapter,
wich
is in fact the Supplement,
Migrant Narratives
-
Gastarbeiters
Life Stories, I recount,
summed up conversations with and accounts told by
gastarbeiters and their compatriots.
