Beschreibung: | At head of title: MDCCXVI. - Drake, M. Almanacs, 2971. - Evans, 1777. - The Anatomy is the only illustration. This relief cut is identical line for line with that in the North-American calendar and Gentlemen and ladies diary, being an almanack for 1773, by Samuel Stearns (Boston : Edes & Gill and T. & J. Fleet), where it is attributed erroneously to Paul Revere by C.S. Brigham in his Paul Revere's Engravings, p. 136. The cut in Robie is in turn a copy of that which appeared in John Tully's almanacs for 1693-97 (Boston : Benjamin Harris, Bartholomew Green, and John Allen) and which continued in use in the almanacs printed by Green as late as 1723, appearing finally in Nathaniel Whittemore's 1724 almanac printed by Allen. The Robie version (in which the spelling of Pisces is corrected from "Pisses") was last used in Nathaniel Low's An astronomical diary or almanac for 1779 (Boston : J. Gill and T. & J. Fleet), thus apparently having remained in the Fleets' possession and use for at least 63 years. (Brigham omits the Fleets when citing the imprint of Stearns' almanac, giving only Edes & Gill) |
