Summary
Sandomierz
is one of the oldest cities in Poland. Gall

claimed that
Sandomierz
was one of the main cities of

prin¬
cipales.
The church influenced significantly the development of this
city. Romanesque collegiate church, priesthood and the early pres¬
ence of monasteries: Dominicans , Franciscans and Duchacy s that
dates back to the beginning of the 13th century; and finally the strong
influence of people such as
Wincenty Kadłubek
shaped local society
and determined its functioning. Among ecclesiastical institutions, the
collegiate church and connected with it priesthood played the biggest
role. It was led by the local chapter and supported by priests orga¬
nized in collegiums of curates, mansioners, psalmists and acolytes.
This numerous group included significant people who influenced Pol¬
ish culture and history. We can mention not only famous and blessed
chronicler
Wincenty Kadłubek
but also the chancellor
Mikołaj Trąba,
Krakow s bishop
Zbigniew Oleśnicki,
the bibliophile and patron of the
arts
Piotr Tomicki,
the founder of the library as a public institution
Wacław Hieronim Sierakowski
and one of the most prominent figures
of Polish Enlightenment
Hugon Kołłątaj
.
Each of them had a signifi¬
cant influence on religious and cultural aspects of this group. One of
them was love of books . It was not only the feature of people men¬
tioned above. We can find a lot of bibliophiles among Sandomierz s
priests. A book was very important in their lives not only as a part of
liturgy or Christian ministry. It was a source of knowledge and new
experience. It also showed their personal interests and started to be
present in their private, professional and religious life.
All these issues were analyzed in this work. One of them described
in the first chapter includes the production of the book beginning with
manuscript writing that were made with hands of numerous scribes.

Summary
This period ended when Gutenberg invented a mechanical printing
machine. Thanks to it, a book started to be more available, because
many copies were made and sold. Precious volumes were objects of
interests of Sandomierz s collegiate environment in the times of man¬
uscripts and printing. They also took an active part in books pro¬
duction. Moreover, manuscript writing did not end even after the in¬
vention of printing machine. In

century beautiful and decorated
manuscripts were treated with respect and still ordered and bought.
But growing popularity of printed works and their availability started
to displace them. Printed works started to be popular even among
Sandomierz s collegiate groups. Over the centuries church hierarchs
put much attention to the truth and the purity of the printed word.
On the basis of many examples we can notice their cooperation with
printers when it came to the printing and publishing process. These
examples show that Sandomierz s bibliophiles had an impact on the
development of Polish typography. Next part says where Sandom¬
ierz s local chapter found its precious manuscripts. Most of them were
bought according to the popularity, the necessity of its usage in a sci¬
entific work or personal interests. They were bought in national and
external centers. Books were also exchanged, given as a present from
a friend or sent by an author who usually had a hope for some good
reviews. Usually after a bibliophile s death books were given to some
other people. These were usually heirs and different institutions. This
tendency was visible in priests last wills. Another popular way of gain¬
ing books was collecting. It was present especially in

century and
saved many libraries that were liquidated together with monasteries.
The concern connected with books gathering caused that their stor¬
age and publishing process became even more important. These is¬
sues were described in the third chapter. Books were kept in special
rooms that were prepared only for this purpose and equipped with
appropriate bookshelves. When a library was numerous its organiza¬
tion on the shelves was very difficult so the preparation of catalogue
■was necessary. Smaller libraries were also organized in catalogues.
These lists of books are very precious source of information about
library s collections. When a library was liquidated and the collection
was separated or when books were destroyed the list of works is the
only guide. From remaining books we can find out a lot about their
owners. Books were often marked with personal signs, bookplates.
The most popular were
exlibris
and superexlibris. Other notes that
can be found in books give us the information about the price of the
book and the place of purchase. Superexlibris was stamped on the
book s binding and was often an expression of bibliophile s passion

towards literature. Moreover, books covers were beautifully decorated
and showed that their look was an important matter. Precious vol¬
umes were gathered not only because of the material value but also
because of the contents that they included. Their usage is described
in the fourth chapter. The possibility of lending a book from public
libraries or sharing it among friends were chances to familiarize with
the written text without the necessity of buying it. It was especially sig¬
nificant when it came to rare books, or when it helped poorer societies
in the education process. Of course in situations described above, the
owner should have been aware of the possibility of losing his property
but it happened very rarely. In lending a book the most important was
to get to know its content and it was achieved through reading. Many
examples show that Sandomierz s collegiate church treated reading as
a part of its life and could not imagine living without it. It was present
in the times of work, prayer and rest. This tendency was visible among
people living in this times and is very important to modern researchers
who analyze notes written on books margins and every underlined
line. Notes left on margins give us a lot of information about their us¬
ers and show an active role of a book in their lives. People entrusted
books their thoughts, public and private matters. Moreover, Sandom¬
ierz s bibliophiles devoted their time to writing and thanks to it we
can get a knowledge about their personal interests. Even if now these
works are understood only by specialists, they show that Sandom¬
ierz s bibliophiles were actively interested in science. The examina¬
tion of bibliophiles works helps to tell us something more about the
sources that they used in the process of preparation. The presence of
printed or written by hand dedications confirms that they were a part
of every copy of a book. Books with dedications had their own, special
character reminding about an author, a person who gave this book
to someone, someone who got this book as a present and readers.
Dedication is a factor that says a lot about a person. The important
role of the library in Sandomierz s collegiate society influenced also
other institutions and local people. All of them created an interesting,
various society of receivers and creators. It was analyzed in the fifth
chapter. Parish and monastic libraries supplemented collegiate library
and started to become equally good, developed and numerous. San¬
domierz s middle class was influenced by the love of books tendency
and followed the best role model. Mutual relations enriched and moti¬
vated. What is more, local scholarship was on a very high educational
level. Schools were led by collegiate, monasteries and parish. Young
people could notice the role of the book in their lives. Unfortunately
not everyone understood it. Many libraries and books were stolen or

destroyed. It was also caused by disasters, political and social events
and people s actions. Every book has gone through its own, unique
way. To sum up,
Sandomierz
had exceptionally numerous libraries
what definitely enriched the whole city. Books that were especially
significant for collegiate society played very big role in the lives of their
owners in many aspects of living.
