Evreii Someşeni (Someseni
Jews) presents
a brief history of the Jews in the Somes River region, in
Northern Transylvania, Romania. This study focuses on the
history of the two present Jewish communities, the one of
Bistritza and the one of
Dej,
which were once part of an area
with a major, impressive and diverse Jewish presence, that
represented an important page in the history and cultural
development of these lands.
Jewish presence in this region has been reported since
antiquity, but the beginning of the massive Jewish settelment in
this area relates to the appointment of Gabriel
Bethlen
as leader
of this region in
1613.
He issued a Privilege , a favorable and
tolerant law for the Jews, through the influence of his personal
Jewish physician, Abraham
Sossa
(called also Satza or
Sarka).
The landlords liked the idea of having Jews on their properties
to sell the agricultural products produced by the peasants who
were compelled, almost as slaves, to work the land. The Jews
settled in many small towns and cities, such as Beclean
(Bethlen),
part of the large estate of the
Bethlen
family and in
other villages, and for many years were not allowed to live in
the big cities, with the exception of Alba Iulia. Even later on, in
1720-1780,
with the exception of Alba Iulia, Transylvania Jews
dwelled in about
170
villages and
20
small towns, built small
synagogues and study houses, Hebrew schools, mikvaot (ritual
baths), and lived a vibrant Orthodox Jewish life. In addition to
the typical rural occupations necessary for daily life, these
Jewish families performed specific activities that were not
common practice for others residents of the villages, like
opening small stores, and pharmacies with all kind of drugs
and tinctures, as well as retail shops, tailor and shoemaker
shops, shops for boiling and selling drinks and even small
restaurants.
Jews began to settle increasingly in the cities in the
nineteenth century, after a long battle for emancipation and
rights, and they established strong communities with a major
positive impact on the development of those cities. Several

Jewish families built the first factories and important
businesses in the city of
Dej,
and trade and services sectors
were improved by the Jews in Bistritza.
Jews of this region were blessed with the spiritual
guidance of several Orthodox rabbinical dynasties, and famous
yeshivot (Jewish religious Academies) were established in
Dej,
Beclean and
Bistriţa.
Many of the prominent thinkers and
authors perished in the
Shoah, but
some of them managed to
escape and settle in Israel or the USA. Only two synagogues,
were restored after the war: the Great Synagogue of Bistritza,
and the Great Temple of
Dej,
having remained from the many
synagogues and prayer houses in the area destroyed by the
ravages of the
Shoah,
and by the negligence of the authorities
during the almost
50
years of the communist period.
From
1940-1944,
Northern Transylvania was
incorporated into Hungary, and the Jews from the Somes
region perished together with hundreds of thousands of
Hungarian Jews in the
Shoah.
The Great Synagogue of Bistritza, beautifully restored
with its small exhibit of museum objects, as well as the
Deportation Memorial monument in front of the synagogue
and the Great Temple of
Dej,
are a small memorial to the large
Jewish communities of the Somes river region, a memory
fighting with the relentless passage of time.
