Despite international and national guarantees to
equal rights, individuals with disabilities continue to
face steep challenges in their fight to achieve global
employment equality. In Organisation for Economic
Co-operation and Development
(OECD)
member
countries, the employment rate among persons
with disabilities is just over 4O%, compared to
75%
among persons without a disability; in many low- and
middle-income countries, these employment dispari¬
ties are even greater.
The factors contributing to disabled persons*
inequitable treatment on the job market are as
complicated as they are numerous. Besides isolating
these factors and discussing their impacts, Disability
and Equity at
Worte also
offers prescriptive, practical
interventions for leveling this historically uneven
playing field. Chapters in this volume bring a global
perspective to the topic and include:

Heymann was
the Founding
Director of the Institute for Health and Social Policy
at McGifl University and the Project on Global Work¬
ing Families at Harvard University. She established
and leads the WORLD Policy Analysis Centre, the
first global initiative to examine social policy in all

look at how social and environmental policies affect
the ability of individuals, families, and communities
to meet their health and welfare needs across the
political, economic, and social spectrum worldwide»
MICHAEL ASHLEY STEIN holds a J.D, from
Harvard Law School and a Ph.D. from Cambridge
University- He is the co-founder and Executive Direc¬
tor of the Harvard Law School Project on Disability,
and has taught at Harvard» New York University, and
Stanford law schools. An internationally recognized
expert on disability law and policy, Stein participated
in the drafting of the UN Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities and actively consults with
governments on their disability laws and policies»
Stein has received numerous awards for his work,
and was recently appointed by President
Obama
to
the United States Holocaust Council.
GONZALO
MORENO managed the Disability and
Equity Initiative at the Institute for Health and Social
Policy, which examined what policies and programs
around the world are leading to labor market
improvements for persons with disabilities, with a
specific focus on equitable, integrated, and sustain¬
able employment. Moreno now coordinates a large-
scale international research and training project that
seeks to understand how social policy affects infant»
