THE PERIOD BETWEEN the World Wars
was one of tine richest and most inventive
in tine long history of Britisln literature.
Interwar literature, David Trotter argues,
stood apartby virtue of tine sheer
intelligence of tine enquiries it undertook
into tine technological mediation of
experience. After around 1925, literary
worRs began to portray communication
by telephone, television, radio, and sou in cl
cinema — and to examine tine sorts of
behavior made possible for tine first tiinne

everyday modem life.
