SUMMARY
In today's world of advanced technologies and competitive media, the
textbook still remains the standard source of instruction among teachers and
students. The purpose of this book is to analyze several important problems
related to the state standards for approval, issuance, and distribution of
textbooks.
The first accent is placed on some theoretical aspects, foremost those
associated with the Common Core State Standards, school curricula, and their
implementation in a school textbook. The core and essence of every textbook
is its specific educational contents. In the case of historical education, the
textbook, albeit limited within certain frames, is very often the only source of
learning about the human experience and the only tool for developing
historical consciousness and historical thinking. The history textbook is
especially important for educating young adults' critical thinking skills and
helping them grow into people capable of a critical perception of reality.
In a democratic society, to which we are aspiring, it is very important
to learn from history in order to establish a civic society: a society, based on
the rule of law, respect towards institutions, and affirmation of democratic
values. History is the school subject imbued with a sense of purpose, and we
have to work to achieve this set of educational goals.
The second important stress of the book is placed on the didactical
components of a textbook, those that work together with the main text to help
teach students' skills to observe, analyze, and apply basic historical methods.
Constructivism as a pedagogical approach is directed precisely towards
forming of various competencies, not only intellectual, but also practical skills,
applicable in real life. Shaping historical way of thinking and critical attitude
towards reality
-
these are among the important and real goals of historical
education. Learning their national and world history helps young people
understand that we are part of a changing world, that globalization is a reality,
and that communication, knowledge, and skills are the core elements of every
person, who would like to apply himself in the modern world.
The last issue of this book is the author's analysis of several problems
observed in some Bulgarian, Spanish, and Mexican history schoolbooks. They
are written at different times and with a different purpose, but our aim is to
propose a model of analyzing textbooks.

Also, we would like to compare the Bulgarian historiography with that
of other countries, because every textbook mirrors both the current stage of
research and its achievements and the current societal need for knowledge.
Every generation has its own reading of history. On this stage, it's our turn to
offer ours. We hope we have been useful to our readers.
