ABSTRACT
The primordial axioms and goals that have boosted the Romanians'
historical development from its ancient beginnings to the present day,
have been Romanian tradition, ethnicity, identity, endurance, state
unity, national independence, cultural timing, and integration into the
rhythm of development of European and world civilisation.
Against the background of the successive transformations undergone
by the Romanians' historical development, the ideals just mentioned can
be seen, according to the distinguished Romanian historian, Academician
Ioan-Aurel Pop, as constant1 elements of the evolutionary process, which

Iorga called constant aspects of the Romanians' historical
development, „which ought to be revealed constantly, given that they
substantially feed not only historiography2, but also the general
Romanian strategy to consolidate and perpetuate them.
They have triggered, guided, and boosted the militancy of the
Romanian intellectual elite, joining the efforts of Romanians everywhere
in their common struggle to accomplish these ideals.
Passed on from generation to generation, these ideals have
aspired, strengthened, and intensified the revolutionary struggle, as
well as the Romanians' spiritual emulation for freedom, social justice,
ethnic equality, national unity and independence, emancipation and
cultural integration at European level.

Romanian culture were asserted. They have been formulated
and asserted in liturgical books and in religious literature, with a view to
receiving a scholarly, scientific argumentation in the European context,
receiving polemical overtones in historiography, in the works of
chronicle writers. Erudition, European perspective, polemical tonality,
and pathos dominated their consistent, tenacious, and inseparable
approach, in the scientific works of the Transylvanian School
(„Şcoala
Ardeleană")
scholars.
Turned into national goals, they are included in the programmes
of cultural, patriotic, scientific, and literary societies founded in the
18th century, which served subtle national and political purposes. The
fulfillment of these purposes has increased to the dimension of
dignity, perseverance, eloquence, courage, and persuasion, incredible
for those times, the unparalleled combativeness pathos, and militancy
of the media, which, despite the rigors, regulations, and authorities,
have received heroic connotations.
Along with the scientific, cultural and patriotic organizations
and societies, the newspapers, "the lungs of a nation" (O.
Goga)
have
contributed to the strengthening of awareness of ethnicity and national
unity, to cementing the ties between the Romanians from all over the
ethnic territory, mobilizing and preparing them for the great
achievements of the 19th century: the Revolution of
1848,
the
1859
Union of the Principalities, which culminated triumphantly in the
setting up of ASTRA Society and the Romanian Academy.
By planting in a structural belief in the vital role of language as a
"sacred token of identity"
(Eugen Simion)
and an ethnic and moral
binder at a national level, they have promoted the ultimate goal of
fostering and unifying the Romanian literary language as a primary
factor of state and political unity.
